I've been scanning these threads and have to say that in addition to some strong opinions, you guys have a ton of real experience that's all very helpful to a noob like myself.
Like another poster, I made my first diesel purchase yesterday. And, like that guy, I ran into the same exact sign on the pump (ULSD-Highway Diesel could damage blah, blah, blah...). I filed 2, 5-gallon containers and added the recommended JD fuel conditioner. But I stopped short of filling my tractor so I could scan this forum and be sure I was doing the right thing. Kind of a "measure twice, cut once" deal.
This is an example of the kind of information I've absorbed and I am hoping you can expose my ignorance or confirm my intelligence, whichever is most appropriate:
1. The color of Diesel is related to whether taxes have or have not been paid on the fuel.
2. ULSD will not harm my 2006 JD 4cyl. Diesel engine.
3. Fuel additive is always a good idea, use seasonal versions of same.
4. Cetane ratings as listed in the tractor manual are good guidlelines, but since I can't find any cetan ratings listed on any of the local pumps, I shouldn't worry about it since I'm using an additive.
5. There really is no such thing as a pump for "off-road diesel".
6. Bringing up bio-diesel or any other form of alternative fuel in a thread is a good way to get the thread whacked. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
