Well I've been playing in the dirt for over a month now building what I'm calling my dirt garden. It's really a track for radio controlled cars but I've got too much darn time into this project to just call it a track so I've decided the title garden is more fitting. Anyway the tc45 is still running great with over 100 hours on it now.

Wow...

I just got a visual of driving on a full-scale version of that track...

I think I'll go lay down for a while & see if my stomach settles.

It's funny you say that because I usually build motocross tracks and I basically came up with what I thought would be a cool full scale layout for dirt bikes and scaled it down for the little cars. I'd love to have a full scale copy of this track to ride on!

In my younger days I used to hang out with some buddies and we would race our RC-10's. Always had a great time:D .

By the looks of your track, I would guess that 9 volt battery power is not going to get it. I assume your cars are gas powered.

I do remember it was an expensive hobby 20 years ago. I can only imagine what it costs now:eek: .

Yes my cars are nitro powered. I actually have 2 rc10's right now....great little trucks. As far as the cost I think it's actually cheaper now than ever. Granted if you want to top notch set up you can spend a fortune but you can get a ready to run (comes assembled and includes motor and radio gear) nitro stadium truck, kinda like the rc10, for $200.00. There are so many companies making this stuff these days (even china) thats it's really made it fairly affordable to get into it.

I got into RC planes and trucks a long time ago, the prices now to then are like 1/10th the cost now vs then. I have easy $1500. into a nice RC trainer setup all hand built by me from a KIT balsa plane with hb20 engine. now you can buy similar performance less than 200... :( I don't have place or time to play anymore so it sets waiting until I retire or croke...

that is very impressive track though. now where are the bleachers and drivers podium??? :D

I've got a basement full of r/c planes as well, all sitting ready to go. I just got tired of hauling them around every time I wanted to fly them. As far as a drivers stand goes thats next on the list then I need a better watering system and more money! My little track project has gotten expensive very quickly. I've blown through $200 in diesel fuel and that 4" drain tube cost me over $400 (there's 1000 feet of it) but it's all part of the game I guess.

Wow, backyard, that is an impressive looking piece of precision work.

Did you use GPS or just dead reckoning and the ol' eyeball? Which one gets the most work building this thing, the skid-steer or the tractor?

I am most impressed.......:)

Yes I tried to make everything look perfect and it was all done by eye. The tractor did most of the work, followed me with hand tools and a plate compactor. We only used a skid loader at the end to help shuttle dirt from one side of the field to the other. I have a high spot in my yard (on the other side of the track) that I scraped all the dirt from. I know it doesn't look like it in the pics but theres probably close to 600 yards of dirt in the track because I raised up the one side so much. The skid just moves dirt a lot faster than the tractor, but the tractor has a/c and a radio!

That looks very nice. I look foward to the day I can build a track for my dirt bikes. I assume this is not your first track looking at the sign on your trailer.

GOD man! You have to put warning's on posts like this! :D

If my son was to see this, I would NEVER hear the end of it. Right now he is just dragging his clean with the box blade, but I don't think his cars hold a candle to yours. :)

Very nice by the way.

Very cool cars. Right now I'm running all nitro stuff. I've got an 1/8 scale buggy and a couple rc10gt's. I did buy my wife a couple electric stadium trucks so she has something to drive with me and I'm actually pretty impressed with the new electric stuff. How do you like the mini-t's? I built this track as a demo track to show what we are capable of doing and I plan on getting these pics on our web site. What I'd really like to do is come up with a few cool 1/18 scale tracks (for trucks like the mini-t) that I could build for people that have small lots...hence the whole "backyardtrack" name. I figure I could build a sweet track for the small electrics in a 25'x40' area with out needing a ton of dirt and they could be built in a weekend.

Man, that is amazing. Hmmm, wonder what my wife would say....

Excuse my ignorance about RC cars, but are they expensive for a basic beginner unit? Where does a person buy nitro?

out of the box the mini-t's are really fun.

they suffer from crappy stearing servo... im on my like 5th now. they are propritary so to replace it you have to go with an all new ESC and reciver. so a $15 servo is $100 upgrade :( so i buy $12 stock replacements.

With mild motor upgrade and 6 cell pack (my stock motor lasted about...40 packs or so) is about all you need for some serious butt kickn fun! goes just fast enough that you can still control it, enough power to power out of the dips, but not heavy or fast enough to really break stuff every time you slam into something.

my RC18T is a diffrent animal. the 4wd makes a huge diff off road in hardpack, but its so fun to pull the drifts and slides you can with the mini-t. The minipins dont last long, but once you wear them down they make great slicks for the pavement.

The 1/18 scale track would be fun, but seems like you build most of it by hand, at my old house i had a nice little track setup in the back yard of nothing but hard pack dirt the dogs created for me. A few bomb holes and 1 or 2 plywood jumps (usually not more than 2" tall) and your looking at hrs of fun. (in 20 min increments)

I would like a larger track for my buggy and t-max, but like anything else, seems theres always some other project. I usually just bust it out when im in the middle of some other project and create in impromptu track (like out of the pool dig project.

most of us buy nitro at the local RC shop. you CAN buy through the mail/internet but are limited to small quanties due to hazardous shipping regulations. (btw this is premixed)

a basic 1/18 scale car like a mini-t or rc18t or any of the others that are out there now will run about a $150. Those are electric.

a nitro setup my prefered option but nothing as simple as pluggin in a bat pack and running for 10 min. a nitro car can be had for about $300 (basic traxxas rustler or something)

but to be honest ive never bought one new expect for my mini-t and rc18t. all the others ive bought off of people selling... Craigslist has some good deals if you know what to look for. usually already have everything you need, boxes, extra parts, upgrades, chargers.... most often some kid gets tired of it and wants $$ for soem new video game, or breaks it puts it on the shelf and then a year later decides to dust it off, notice its broke and just wants to get rid of it. Those are your best deals.

I guess it depends what you want to call expensive. You can get a nice entry level gas (nitro) truck for $200-$300 and thats ready to run. You just add fuel and batteries. You get the fuel from any hobby shop. Some people call it nitro but it's really glow fuel. It's a mix of alcohol, oil, and nitromethane. You can get nice electric vehicles for say $150 and up but thenyou need to buy the hobby grade rechargeable batteries and charger. The new electric are very fast, not like radio shack toys. It just depends on what you want.

The mini-t comes with a pack to put AA's in. for about 2 months i ran 2200 Panasonic rechargeable (lith-ion) from costco. got the kit of 6 AA and wall charger for like $22. run times ~20min.

the RC18t comes with a little 6 cell pack, and wall charger. I ran the stock pack for weeks before i mistakenly overcharged it with my "quick charger"

My 30 yo (youngest) is really into the RC cars and races them in Topeka. I told him about this thread, I'm sure he'll be reading.
