Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

I think I like XP a lot better than ME, but today I'm not so sure I like any of them. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I bought the new TurboTax yesterday and spent about 4 hours trying to install it and talking to Intuit on their "chat line." I've done everything they said to do (except for the things that simply do not apply - like removing certain files that don't exist anyway), and I still cannot get it to install. It'll go all the way through the normal installation to the point of "Creating desktop icon and program group" then it'll pop up a dialog box that says "Error creating necessary version files. Please contact Intuit technical support" which I've done 5 times. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Junkman,

Yes.......I was afraid of that, or I guess hopeing for a easy out.
Letme ask you this, do I upgrade for $200.00 or full blown version for $300.00? Or..a whole new cheap computer for $700.00 and give up the tooth bar? Gotta keep it tractor you know. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Any quirks with just the upgrade? Thank's Junkman.

Dieselsmoke, That's exactly what I can't do...(click on that site link that you provided) Thank's though for trying to help.

Cris, yes the operating system is a little different but you got me to where I needed to be. However I can only restore to yesterdays date which is corrupt. Who would have figured that one?

Thank's for the info guys. Now off to the CFO /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Bird,
Remember those little bugs we talked about a while back? You probably found one.

I think I must have found a big bug instead of a little one. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I've used TurboTax Deluxe for quite a few years now, and last year was the first time I've had a problem with it. It installed, but then popped up an error message. I contacted Intuit and when they couldn't figure out any solution, they sent me a new CD. Well, it did the same thing. I got an error message (forgot what it was) after the installation, but it actually worked just fine. Not this year with TurboTax Deluxe; I can't get it to run at all. I'm going to try in the next day or two installing it on my daughter's computer to see whether it's must my computer or if it's the CD I got from CompUSA.

Let us know how it comes out. I've already got a prime suspect /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Well, it installed OK on my daughter's computer, so apparently the problem is with my own computer and I have no idea what it might be. I think I need to hire someone to come clean this thing up a bit for me.

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Bird,

If I recall correctly, you have to turn off your anti-virus software to install TurboTax. That was a few years ago, so it may not apply this millennium. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Actually, Norton AntiVirus will show a possilbe virus if you don't turn it off (which I did) and it's just "script blocking" whatever that is. Intuit's web site explains that; you can either turn off the antivirus or allow that one time deal to pass when you get the dialog box. In the past it really wasn't necessary to even turn off the antivirus (although it's recommended), but this time it wouldn't work even with it off on my computer.

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

My personal preference is to buy the complete version of an operating system and read all the things that you have to do first before installing the new operating system. Once you have installed the new, the old is gone forever and will not bother you again. The reason that Bird is having problems with Turbo Tax is that there are conflicts between the old and the new versions. I always try to uninstall the old versions of software before putting on the new. As a machine ages, the programs that are running on it start to get conflicts, which I have no idea why.... new software seems to have conflicts with the old software..... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you're talking about the old versions of TurboTax, I "uninstalled" those each year and filed the CD along with the paper copy of my tax return each year, so while I still have all the CDs, they've all been uninstalled, and I can find no indication of anything to do with TurboTax on my computer (of course the fact that I can't find any indication sure doesn't mean such doesn't exist. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif).

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

I think that Turbo Tax comes with a little spy program that reports back to the IRS everything that you do.... I believe that it is part of the Homeland Security Act!!!!! LOL ........ /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Uncle Sam is watching you..... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Well.......I installed XPpro and I'm up and running. The only problem was finding the newest driver for my cable modem, but my service provider took care of that for me.

Works like a champ so far.!! Thank's again, George /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Bird

You might go to the search function and type in turbo tax. I think you will find that there are still some files left over from your uninstall. You will have to manually delete these files to get rid of them. This might be enough to cause compatibility problems with the new program. This might not help at all but is worth a shot.

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

I have just run into the same problem going from Norton Anti Virus 2003 to Norton System Works 2003.. After spending 6 hours trying to repair the problem, I have given up and have resolved myself to the fact that the entire program might not work, but the Anti Virus protection is working and that is all that I care about.....

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Thanks, Dozernut, but I did that (several times in fact) and found nothing. Now of course there could be some files that don't have the words "turbo tax" in them, but when I "uninstalled" previous versions, I also let it remove any "shared files" it said were no longer needed. Whatever the problem is, has to be my computer, because it installed OK on my daughter's computer.

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Maybe we're just unlucky, Junkman. I'm running Norton SystemWorks 2002 with no problem and my daughter recently put 2003 on her computer with no problem. Sure wish I had a computer expert to sit down here and clean this contraption up.

Re: My Computer\'s Gone Berserk!

Bird,

I know you say you have already bought the software, but I was wondering if you knew that free software is available from companies who are “partners” with the IRS. At least this was the situation last year. They all had stipulations regarding income to use them, but one was available for my situation and I used it. It worked like a charm and it was all completely free including the electronic filing. I am hoping this program is available this year.

Junkman,

<font color="blue"> The ME operation system if one of the worse products to come out of Microsoft in my opinion... </font>

I totally agree. Had it installed for a brief time and had lots of little problems. Went back to 98SE.
