Speaking of my tractor, my wife doesn't know it yet, but to commemorate her struggle with breast cancer, I've been thinking of adding a small pink ribbon somewhere on it after it's finished. By the way, I've made a lot of progress with the hydraulics and will post about it soon.

The ribbon is a great idea.

Look forward to hearing how the internals are and whether or not you find any excess grease towards the rear of the cavity.

That's a great picture of you and your daughter, the toboggan hat she's wearing really brought back some memories of my wife's hair loss after her chemotherapy treatments. Likewise, I hope your daughter is doing well. My wife is doing as well as can be expected, but she still has a long road ahead of her.

Cancer does cause a lot of pain and heartache, but I've learned that it can also be a source of strength. In my case, I've gained more strength from the experience than I could have ever imagined. With each new challenge that arises, I somehow find a way to cope regardless of how difficult it might be. In this case, I'm coping by restoring my tractor.

Massey that would be a lovely thing indeed to add a ribbon, what a wonderful tribute to your wife. :)

Looking forward in reading your continued posts on your work on your tractor, and thank-you for considering any questions we may have.

The following are pictures of my progress while working on the hydraulics of my Massey 135 tractor. Since these pictures were taken, I've removed the internal hydraulic pump and made a lot of progress towards cleaning out the sludge in both sumps.

The hydraulic top cover is a very heavy and awkward part to handle. I have an old set of bathroom scales and thought about using the engine hoist to lower it onto the scales to see just how much it really weighs. I picked it up briefly, just enough to take the weight off the chains, and I'm guessing it weighs about 150 pounds, without the lift arms attached to it.

Look forward to hearing how the internals are and whether or not you find any excess grease towards the rear of the cavity.

As you can see in the second picture, there was a considerable amount of grease buildup from the rock-shaft, which probably contributed greatly to the sludge buildup at the bottom of the transmission/axle sumps.

Looks very familiar, took me a while to clean mine up. Now I give two squeezes into each grease point, can't afford to wait until I see it come out around the shaft.

The previous owner(s) must have loved grease. I've spent the better part of a day doing nothing but removing grease and cleaning up the residue it leaves behind. Also, I've finished disassembling the hydraulic top cover which was a bit tricky, but overall it wasn't too bad.

The lift piston and rod are very substantial aren't they, I was quite surprised to see traces of what appeared to be cross hatch marks on the cylinder walls of mine.

They are indeed quite substantial, especially the piston, but considering the amount of force it applies to the lift arms it only makes sense that everything has to be very strong.

The crosshatch marks are from the cylinder honing process, much the same as would be done to an engine cylinder so the rings are properly lubricated while they seat. Mine had traces of a crosshatch pattern left as well, but I plan to hone it again to break the glaze and allow the rings to re-seat. In addition, I plan to use a little valve lapping compound to seat the dog-bone push rod to the piston.

The following are pictures of my cylinder and dog-bone push rod assembly shortly after the hydraulic top cover was removed.

Yes, it is a similar process to cross-hatching cylinder walls, although somewhat coarser and a little less deflection then recommended for cylinder walls. A couple of pics of mine. I gave everything a good cleaning but didn't disassemble any of the linkages, by then I'd realized I needed to try to flush the grease from everything.

I was finally able to get the draft response control quadrant cover plate screws out by using a Phillips head bit, a pair of vise grips, and a hammer. Using this method, I was able to loosen all 4 screws in only a few minutes.

Clamp the vise grips on the Phillips head bit and put the tip of the bit into the screw like you would to turn it with a screwdriver, then tap the end of the bit with a hammer as you apply pressure inward and in the direction necessary to remove the screw, usually counterclockwise. If done properly, the hammer creates rotational force against the screw head, which is effectively applied as if the whole contraption were an impact gun, thus forcing the screw to loosen.

The following is a picture of what I found hiding behind the draft response control quadrant cover plate.

They make "impact screwdrivers" That you put your bit in then whack with a hammer and it rotates it as your whack. Worked the one time i could not get the plug out of my outboard foot.
