Will be purchasing a MX5800HST w/ SSQA LA1065 loader soon & was going to wait on the grapple but think I'm going to bite the bullet & order one. Main objective is to move logs but might move some brush & possibly some rocks (if that won't hurt the grapple). I don't know much about grapples so what size would you recommend & what manufacturer/make? Any tips/suggestions are appreciated!

Do you know what can of worms you just opened?!

More answers to this than politicians in ****!

Do a search on TBN. Lots and lots and lots of threads... And angry arguments!

I own 2 and would like a third!

Your right there! I personally have a HD 48" on a MX5100 and for my needs it works great (I wanted a smaller one to save weight) but others like wider for their uses. All depends on what you want and like. They are all handy!

Only one undeniable truth: "any grapple is better than no grapple at all!" :drink:

Go the Pictures only grapple thread. Not actually pictures only...

I just ordered an Everything Attachments Wicked 73 dual lid utility grapple for my M7060. I plan to do the same kind of things you plan to do. I also have a Woodmizer saw mill and will be moving a lot of logs and slab wood. I think with your tractor you would be better off with EA痴 compact Wicked grapple to save weight. I chose EA because of their durability, design, value and customer service. I put off buying one for a few years. That has allowed me to do a ton of research. I feel that I have made the right decision, but time will tell. For some reason grapple questions invoke a great deal of passionate dialogue. Good luck with whatever you decide and congrats on the new tractor!

This is definitely a frequently discussed topic here at TBN and you will find many differing opinions if you do a search.

In my case, I chose a Blue Diamond 72" grapple which closely matches the track width of my MX5800.

As you know, wider units weigh more and you sacrifice some lifting ability. Don't buy more grapple than you need.

Don't forget the 3rd function valve or rear remote necessary to power the implement.

American Attachments is out of Lexington NC. You can drive to Kaufman trailers and pick one up. You can save come serious coin. Other suggestions are Everything Attachments and Construction Attachments in Lenior. I would believe cash in hand and pickup would save you money.

There are basically two types of grapples.....so analyze your needs, do some searching.....and decide what type you are gonna want.

Those two types are the "rake" type.....that dont really have "carry" capacity as the tines are short and stubby. Cylinders are usually mounted on the outside edges and behind the grapple, and push vertically to close the lid. They look like these
Compact Tractor Loader XTreme Root Rake Grapple for tractors up to 50 HP

Then there is the "root" type grapple with longer bottom. Better for carrying stuff IMO. Look like these
Compact Tractor Dual Lid Wicked Root Grapple from Everything Attachments

The rake types are better for pushing debris....root type better for carrying. Both do well with rocks, logs, and brush. I like my "root" type because it carries ALOT of firewood. Rake type wont.

After you decide the "type"......if you so choose the root type, you need to decide on single or dual top lids.
Singles are cheaper, simpler, and lighter. And work well for logs and brush. Dual types are more expensive, and heavier, but can grapple more things of odd shapes....or multiple logs at one time where a single might not bite on all you want.

Then its time for shopping. You can get grapples that will work very well with the MX for ~$1000.....or you can get a "better" one and spend 3x's as much. Everyone has their own preferences. I use tomahawk 66" single lid and I use it pretty hard. I think its a really good match for the ~$1000 it cost
