MX5400. What brush cutter size? 60" or 72"?

personally feel a 6' cutter would be a good match, agree with others 5' is small. once had a 6' Bush Hog heavy duty cutter on a MX5000. perfect match. i would lean toward heavier duty than light. certainly not a finish mower

i've always considered 7'cutters as a bastard size. (blades that long can create a lot of vibration) if going that size, step up to a twin spindle 8', but that setup (2000# on my setup) is out of your tractor's league. you'll be fine w/a 6'... regards

Lots of recommendations to cover the track width, so I'll focus on that. I'm considering a woods 72" with a 3 or 4 inch cutting capacity. Woods and bushhog are about all that's carried around here.

4" cutting capacity? i'd be looking at equipment used in utility corridors. 2" would be my limit. think you're spot on w/Woods
have you cut 4" material previously?

I have land Pride heavy duty 72” and works great, would like to have an 84” but would not fit through some of my gates. MX5400 HST with loader.

I agree. Cutting 4" stuff is not easy. I prefer to cut those off at ground level with the chainsaw.

I’ll take what I can get right now due to inventory shortages. I’d like a 3” model but most places either have the lighter duty 2” or the 4” as their customers are either cutting pastures or doing roadside work.

A 4 inch tree with a non-commercial rotary cutter would be an adventure!

But why do that?

Were it me...that's what the grapple is for! I push anything between 3 and 8 inches over with the grapple and pull out the tree with the roots. Lots less debris that way.

It's also less wear and tear on the mowing equipment to stay under 3 inches.

I run an 84 inch Woods Extreme on my MX6000 without issue...hardly know it's there and you have basically the same tractor.

Good luck with whichever you choose.

you're definitely on track & for posting here. just thinking 4" material or even 3 might do more damage to tractor & hog frame & undercarriage than you want. if cutting those larger saplings by chain saw, cut level but you know that, i've had to replace rear loaded tires for angle sapling cuts :) my bad
also, if available, consider ft/rear chains on the deck for safety

maybe post pic of your project in progress. my place here is in fairly rugged conditions in the Ozarks, & have seen what that terrain can do to a lightweight or finish mower. wise choice on your part to get something more robust. cheers

Thank you for all the feedback. My options right now given current inventory are a light duty 2" cutter or heavy duty 4" models. Given that I'll be clearing in the woods, I assumed going with a heavier duty couldn't hurt. I don't plan to cut 4 inch trees with it. :)
