Must Have Shop Items

Later as your shop is well equipped you need a bigger one.

Shucks metal working (chop saw, welder etc) takes up half then if you are also into woodworking, the lathe, table saw drill press and all the assorted power tools take up every other inch of space.
Then if like me my basement shop has its own press drill and all my electronic devices as well as a small atlas lathe.

Now I'd have built a bigger shop but they refused a permit to do so as my septic field was close by.
So come summer I extent to the great outdoors when it does not rain.

As much as I try to be organised it still is cramped and usually messy.
(my welder has long cables)

Don't even know where to start on this. My tool collection continues to grow for several reasons:

1. Needed to do a particular job
2. Needed a better tool because the first one was crap or not big/powerful enough
3. Wanted to do the job better/faster
4. Needed more of the same (clamps)
5. Needed to put something on my xmas list
6. Needed to buy another one because I couldn't find the one I had

Notice most are needs and not wants!

Mark,

When negotiating for a share of the family budget; Needs always get a lot higher priority than wants. Guys do not have "want" in their vocabulary for that reason.

That is why I started the little sideline of buying, trading, and selling welding equipment. That seed pot just gained $300 on a sale of an that item cost me $20 net at the auction. I was a OX/Propane unit to kill moles I figured I would eat. Some day I will get my new "Everlast" welder and a MAG drill. One thing many overlook at the auction is your bid price jumps 20% after bid for buyers premium and tax. I now have about $1K in items to clean up and sell that I am into only $400. I have $150 worth of TIG filler rod in mild steel, SS , and aluminum, I will never use myself, from last months auction. Picked up a nice old MW AC/DC buzz box like the one I had at Olalla. Keeping it till my New machine crops up. A HF TIG kit came with it all for $40.

You wanted an Argon bottle: I now have one that goes with the HF unit. Just had it filled. Lets negotiate.

Several quality LED Work lights. The brighter, the better. 10,000 lumens each with stands would be a good start. The older my eyes get, the better the lighting must be. Overhead lights create to many shadows these days.

Up here, heat in the shop is my big deal. No matter how many tools I have, I sure don't feel like doing anything if I am freezing my butt off. I Have a nice Hotblast woodstove very comfortable inside, no matter how cold outside. Also just added 4 new LED light fixtures, what a difference.
