Yup I've seen some big ones just like that in the last 2 weeks, I don't think he means to eat them though?

My Polish in-laws know there mushrooms pretty well and pick wild ones, but only individual ones, I've never seen big clumps like that for eating.

Seems to be more than normal because of the wetter than average season this year,

I don't think I would eat these. The only eating mushrooms that grow in the fall that I know of in Ohio are puffball mushrooms.

Thats a hen of the woods,AKA sheeps head.

I like these cause ya really cannot get them confused with much else, they grow around old oak trees in september and october. Can getup to 50 lbs. Very tasty shroom, I boil it,then prepare itwith anything, soups, cheesesteaks, sphagetti and the like. Deep fried with olive oil and flour is a **** good treat. They are hard to find though and you have to look good, you could be right on top of it and not even know it. I know where 3 others are, I mark em with my GPS...note..when ya find one, cut it off, but be sureya leave some so it returns next year, also old wives tale is:if ya tellsome one where ya got it, it won't be there next year...go figure!
Here is a shot of the mushroom above before I picked it...this is why they are hard to find.

Thanks for the info. When I saw the oak tree, I took a guess. As whistlepig quoted, "you learn something everyday." Happy Tractoring.

It has been very dry here in the pnw. I was up at one of my favorite spots a few days ago, and the soil was bone dry. It's raining now, so will go up in a week and see if we have any. Hopefully, we won't have an early frost and have this years, stopped before they come out.

I absolutely love those mushrooms. My dad always called them cauliflower mushrooms. He would wash and slice them, then put them in mason jars with oil and a number of spices (very long process).. Let them sit for about 6 months or so and them, WOW. The best tasting mushrooms you will ever find.

Unfortunately my dad passed away 2 months ago, so this year I will have to try and find them myself. Tough to remember all the spot. I like the GPS idea, wish I would have thought of that when my dad was still around. Even if I do find them, I'm sure they will never taste quite as good.

OK I didn't know you could eat them, I've got a yard full of oaks and have been just kicking them. I've also seen them in customers treed yards this year. That is where I've seen them at the base of oaks.

I am not a big fan of mushrooms to begin with, but will have to give them more respect, see if I can harvest some, if it's not to late. Been seeing them for 2 weeks already. Must be a bumper year for them around here cause I don't remember seeing them in such quantity in past years.

Bread Basket likes to stand in the middle of the circle of mushrooms.

This is old thread but I think it wouldn't hurt to restart it. We had below average morel season. Found only about 100 white morels. But oyster mushrooms are prolific this year. We have several dead trees with oyster mushrooms on them. One has the classic (white) oyster and two have golden oyster. Since there are so many I am drying them for after season use.

Clasic oyster mushroom. The mushroom on the top is Dyer's saddle. It is also edible. We tried to eat it but it was not our favorite so we stopped, since there are better choices, picking it.

Its been so very dry this year in Ea WA that the few mushrooms we may get are simply dust this year. I've not seen that type in this neck of the woods. We will get shaggy mane, puff ball & morels if its a damp spring.

I have a LOT of the dryers & read up most people say only eat the outer 2/3's of it. I cut some last season but never got a chance to use them. Have a lot all the time of them on my place one of the few.

I only found 4 morels this year but didn't get out last year so ...

Took this shot with my cellphone of a mushroom on our property. Anyone know what it is?

We found about 3 pounds of morels on our property this year, but we only looked in part that is cutover. Since this is our first year here and we didn't look over the whole property (89 acres), I have no idea if that is good or bad.

Extremely bad year for Morels around my parts. We usually find 125 or more, and this year we might have found 30 total.
