I was just about to hook up my new Muratori Tiller. Thought that I would pump some grease into the shaft end fittings. Then I noticed that they are painted with an ultra thick bright red paint like the rest of the unit.

Do I need to worry about how I actually clean them off? Can I just chip off the paint or might I damage them. What about the little ball on the end?

I know this may seem trivial but I really can't afford to make a major stupid mistake. This equipement was a major purchase for me.

Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide ahead of time!

I had one like that. I used a sharp razor blade to cut around the hole/ball, and it basically came right off. I figure there was residiual grease on the zerk fitting and the paint didn't stick very well. As long as you don't gouge it all up, I don't see how you could hurt it.

Personally, I'd just scrape the paint off with my pocket knife, and put the grease gun to it.

Or just remove the zerk and replace it with a new one if you are really concerned about it.
