Re: MTN TOP TV suppose\'d available channels

If there are few obstructions, then you may receive all the channels listed. Please keep in mind though that many of those stations are HDTV and while the antenna will receive the channel it requires an HDTV receiver to view it. Also, unless all the transmitters are in the same location (yeah, right) you will need a rotater to capture the signal.

Is the cost to make your TV HDTV compatable worth it?

Re: MTN TOP TV suppose\'d available channels

I'm not aware of any set top converters from HD to analog. If you want HDTV you have to by a new TV and if you've priced High Def TVs lately, they aren't cheap. At one time all broadcasters were suppose to be transmitting in HD by 2007 obsoleting all current TVs, but I think that is being pushed back.

Re: MTN TOP TV suppose\'d available channels

I think there is some confusion about HD and DIGITAL.

The FCC wants all stations to transmit in DIGITAL by 2006, I have no idea if that is being changed to '07 or some other time. But there is a big difference between SD or Standard Digital and HD, or High Definition. Both are digital signals.

Currently if you buy a TV set you can get a digital set for a few hundred dollars. However if you want to go to HD, you are talking big bucks. Roughly $2,000 to $10,000 depending on brand, type, etc.

If you have a standard analog TV you can get a digital set top box to allow you to keep using your current TV set. The set top box will recieve the digital signal and convert it to analog, it will then send the analog signal to the TV set.

If you have a digital set, you can not convert it to HD by simply adding a HD set top box. HD set top boxes exist, but they are only for use with HD "monitors" that have HD capabilities but do not have a built in HD tuner.

Think of it this way. All HD is digital. Some digital is HD.

Re: MTN TOP TV suppose\'d available channels

I was just shocked as to what I may be able to receive. I can tell you ain't never got signals from Atlanta or talladega as they are over the next hill. But do get them from birmingham, huntsville and gadsden with powered rabit ears..Wal mart in MD had a set top box to supposedly pick HD for $198.. it said it also had an anolog out for older sets....

Re: MTN TOP TV suppose\'d available channels

Ok... Here is where I really show how much of a "rights" advocate I am. I'm a tin foil hat type when it comes to electronics.. what can I say.. but here goes.

Digital television as it was originally envisioned was great. The HDTV specification is awesome. Thats the good. Now the ugly. Digital television has been hijacked by lobbying arms of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) and laws have been passed that gives the provider the ability to turn off your ability to record. This is an anti-copy bit. It was lobbied to congress as a fix to piracy, but many content delivery corporations are busy readying pay on demand functionality that lets you pay to record a show (something you have always done for free in your own home) it in effect turns off the anti-copy bit transmitted with the show.

Most of the time the EFF leans a little too far to the sensationalism side on things they are against, but in this instace, I think most people don't realize what they are losing. Many of the specifications of HDTV have been recently put there not so much as protection of content from piracy, but as a source of future revenue streams. Most of which the public hasn't even thought of yet.

They will not be getting my analog TV away from me. As long as I have a conversion in place (converter box to analog TV), I'll have a place to stick a recording device.

Do your OWN research on this. EFF isn't making ENOUGH of a big deal about it. It's bound to make you mad when you learn what is going on. Those links above should be just enough to get you started now that you know the acronyms to search for. Artificially restricting capability just so that it can be re-enabled for a fee is just wrong. They have all their bases covered also, the DMCA makes it illegal to tamper with any copy protection even if the content you access is still used in a legal way (in the home by your own family).
