Hello, I'm working on a 1992(?) MTD Task Force riding mower with a Briggs 12 hp I/C, found on a scrap heap. It was in pretty rough shape, but the engine looked decent enough so I thought I'd give it a chance. The wiring in this thing was positively butchered. All the safety switches (Seat, deck, reverse, etc) were bypassed straight from the coil to the ignition switch (orange wire). I even found another ignition switch under the dashboard, still tapped in to the wiring! After untangling this mess, believe it or not, I actually got the engine to start. It runs beautifully other than needing some carb work. The trouble is it will not shut down by switch. I have to pull the plug wire to get it to stop. the engine is a model #281707, sitting on a model #95179 (130-431E62) MTD mower. I have a single black wire with a round connector from under the starter that appears to connect to the red wire on the 5-post ignition switch which also connects to the headlight circuit. My magneto appears properly grounded. The wiring diagram I found mentions a yellow wire coming from the engine to the switch but I see nothing. There are two yellow wires tied together coming from the harness on the switch that have been clipped. They connect to the bottom post on the 5-way. Any thoughts?
