mtd 990 gears out

Can any one tell me if the gears on an mtd 990 about a early 70's model are hard to adjust or replace. When it starts and you put it in gear only 1st and sometimes 2nd gear works but 2nd seems more like 1st, now reverseis also is acting up. Any help would be great.:confused2:

i looked at the picture you have that looks like a mtd 967 its not a 990 mtd 990 has a hydrostatic tran and 15" tire that one has a manaul trans diferent rear fender and 12" tire don't think there are anybelts but i don't no for sure i have never owner one (yet hope to) good luck
