In addition to what Willl said it could also be clogged/restricted fuel filter or line. Also if the fuel tank is below the carburator it could be the diaphram in the carburator.

On an old worn engine, a burned exhaust valve could suck air on the intake stroke which makes the mixture too weak unless the choke is on.

Any smoke and if so what color? And what color is the tip of the spark plug?

This is a real old thread but it's exactly the same problem my Briggs has. No smoke, smells like it is running rich but won't run if choke is opened. Compression seems fair. One backfire pop when you turn it off.

Is there a way to check for a burned exhaust valve without taking the head off?

Thank you,
Jeff

The way gasoline is today clogged jets limiting fuel delivery happen to a lot equipment with small engines that are not run often. Especially if not using like Star Tron or another brand of fuel additive regularly .

IMO thoroughly cleaning the carburetor would the first step on my list of things to do! :D

That's easier than opening the engine. Will give that a try first. Thank you!

DFB,

Finished the carb rebuild and reassembled the blower. Wow! That thing runs like a Tasmanian Devil in a Tornado. Thank you! So much better than tearing the engine apart.
