MT 180 HD

I have an MT180HD when I put in 4-wdr it locks up solid.
Has somebody split one of these tractors apart? I need to split it and have a look to see if something is not shiftting all the way in. I have never had one appart so be good to have an idea how.

It does sound like something isn't moving all the way and locking two gears against each other. You need to get a manual. The I&T service manuals are available. I have one that covers the MT160-MT300 models and it's good enough to help you through most issues. Not nearly as thorough as most true factory service manuals but I have found it invaluable. They are on the net for $15-$30. Ebay always has a number of them.

The first thing I would do is check the 4wd lock lever and make sure nothing is obviously wrong there...roll pin missing and not moving things all the way...something broken, jambed etc. The second thing would be to take the trans cover off and just see if you can actually see what is going on. Looking at the manual, it appears like you should be able to see the sliding and drive gear. Hard to tell from the diagram exactly how things mesh but I bet you will be able to see the issue. If you go to Case IH Parts and look at the hydrostatic drivetrain diagrams for the 234 tractor, you can see the same diagrams that are in the I&T manual. Don't know if that will be of much help to you but it could give you an idea of what you are looking at and frankly, the manual doesn't cover this specific issue per se.
