I have a John Deere snownblower and have also broke my sheer bolts on auger and fan. I spoke with my John Deere service department and he advise me to use Grade 5 sheer bolt1/4 x1 length. also the nut memtioned with groves are to be used for various lenth and break off at point of grove for length needed.
I believe this is a good place to come and get advise

Welcome to TBN. Unless your owner's manual says otherwise, you should follow the advice of the dealer. Using the wrong shear bolts can result in major damage.
