OK here we go, it will be my first time mowing on the weekend. I'm using a 79 B7100 and a finishing mower. I've been told to run at 2800 rpm which give about 540 on the pto. It sure sounds like the little beast is screaming at that speed. Tell me it isn't going to blow apart after running that high for a few hours.

Thanks.

I think that is way to fast. Is this a finish mower or brush hog? doesn't matter really as long as the size matches your hp you should be around 2000rpm give or take 200-300 listen to the motor and adjust ground speed for most efficiency. Finish mower blade sharpness will make a difference too.

Just because it is 540 pto implement doesn't mean it has to be working at that speed

OK, it won't! Does that machine have a tach? My '95 B7100 did not. But PTO speed is only a couple hundred rpm below wide open, and you can't over rev it and hurt it.

I used to just slightly back the throttle off from full on a B5100E. This was using the MMM with a front, electric clutch PTO. It did sound like it was too fast at first, but that's the way the manual said.

No, It doesn't have a tach.

That's what I was told too, a couple hundred below full. Full being 2800 rpm.

It just sounds high. I'm guessing in a lot of cases, there isn't enough power to run in PTO-2 at lower rpm.

B7100 - 16 PTO hp? It depends on what you're cutting. You don't want the engine to lug. Dick Bargeron might have something to say here - he uses PTO 2 for snowblowing with good results, but that's on an L5450. Is your PTO 2 980 RPM or 750. 980 might be a little too high (engine RPM too low).

deisel engines have a governer on them,
should be able to run full throttle all day no problem...

When useing my rear mower on dry..about 5" high of grass, the throttle set about 3/4 plus I over lap the fresh cut grass 1/4 w/the deck.

Slower speed and sharpen blades makes a big differents{also if you can sing a song which I can't /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif} for it may take a while longer.

I always ran my 7100 at full RPM's then backed it off a little. Yes it did sound like it was running to fast. But you will get used to it after a while. Wear hearing protection when running it. This will help and also protect your hearing.

I used to run my B7100 around 3/4 throttle when mowing with a 54" deck and it was just about right. I would increase it a bit if I saw tall grass ahead so not to lug the motor. Never was back to the dealership.
