I have a 29hp Iseki tractor. I want to top a small pasture and also mow an undulating lawn is there one machine that would do both, and what sort of size will my tractor run.
Thanks

I would thinik a 60" rotary cutter and a 72" finish mower would be equipment your machine could handle. Obviously, the finish mower is going to be the best way to go for your lawn. I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you say you "want to top a small pasture" but if it's truly pasture with just grass you want to level out a bit at a higher level you could probably use a finish mower raised to whatever level you want. It's not ideal, but you're looking for a compromise... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Another compromise I've heard of people using is to use a rotary cutter with sharpened blades to do finish mowing. Again, not ideal, but workable. If you're going to do that I might suggest buying an extra set of blades so you'll have sharp, angle edged blades for you lawn and squared edge blades for your pasture.

Good luck with whatever you decide. I hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hard call. Like Gary says.. a sharpened rotary cutter will do a halfway decent cut on a lawn.

A finish mower is gonna take alot of wear and tear on a pasture.. 6" of grass on a finish mower is quite a bit of work... 1-2' of grass will eat the poor thing up.

If I could only choose one.. I'd go with a 5' rotary mower.. sharpend blades.. and then a push mower or weed wacker to catch the fine stuff by the house where you don't want multiple passes and back up marks to cut every last piece of grass with the tractor.

Finish mowers are typically designed to mow short (between 1" and 4" or so). Most rotary mowers Ive seen start around 4" and go up. Perhaps you can get them adjusted to mow shorter? Ive mowed a small but very overgrown paddock w/ my finish mower and found I needed a couple passes to get passable appearance.

On flat land, with my KK 5' rotary mower angled down in front I've mowed down to 2" before... ONLY on flat ground.. otherwise the blades pick everything up.

On my 10 ac I'm renovating.. I think 4" is about where I'm cutting. It lets the grass come up and get some light and it pretty tough on the broadleaf weeds.
