BX2200
Hey guys. I've surfed these forums for a while, and I've found some useful info on here. I, however, have a new issue that I can't seem to find anything on...

I recently inherited a Kubota BX2200 with 1500 hrs on it, give or take. It needed some minor maintenance, like the hydraulic lines cracked, the 60" mower deck front mount frame had been bent over time so I straightened it, etc. It runs nicely, and other than feel like there is a little bit of a hydraulic pump whine (minor, will change filter eventually), I had no major concerns until recently.

About two months ago I paused my mowing to jump off and pick up a golf ball. As I hopped back on, I noticed a very rapid pulsation in the tractor. I thought maybe I had stopped in a place where one of the blades was scalping the yard on a small bump or something, so I raised the deck and the pulsation went away. I thought nothing of it, started back up, finished the yard. This pattern of me sort of noticing it every once in a while, raising the deck, lowering it, kept happening.

About three weeks ago, I started noticing it as I was cutting, which had never happened before. It is a very rapid pulse, not like a surging sound or feeling. So, I stopped, raised the deck, and it quit. I lowered the deck...it came back. Raised it, stopped. Lowered it, heard and felt it again, and it almost sounds like it comes from the rear of the tractor in the hydraulics.

I thought maybe this was the old blades being out of balance; I had gotten a little too deep into some brush on this new property, and whacked god knows what pretty hard. I took those off, sharpened them, checked balance the best I could, remounted. It got worse. So, I did the logical next step and bought new blades from the Kubota dealership which is conveniently by my work. It got even worse. So, it isn't blades, or at least I don't think, and now I have a garbage set of blades if I want to go blasting through the heavy stuff.

I checked out the deck belt: it was worn with a couple of small holes, but the Vs were still completely intact. Picked up a cheap on online ($25), put that on two days ago. The pulsing is muted with a newer, tighter belt, but it is still there.

The last piece of this puzzle that I have noticed is that the pulsation goes away when I throttle down just a hair. Same thing as I'm cutting -- if I bog down a bit in heavy grass, the pulsation stops. If I'm flying around in low grass I can feel it and hear it.

In sum:

Full throttle, deck lowered, rapid pulsation...wumwumwumwumwumwumwumwumwum. Feels like it is tied to the rotation of the blades, to be sure, but it is like the lash from it causes a pulse in the hydraulics.

Raise deck, full throttle, purrs like a kitten.

New blades, new belt.

Hydraulic levels seems to be good everywhere.

Front loader works well.

There is a small but noticeable hydraulic whine when operating, but I cannot say if that is just how this machine normally sounds.

I appreciate any help in advance, because short of heading to the dealership, I have no idea what to try next, and, frankly, I really like working on this on my own...

I would check the universal joints on the mower deck drive shaft. If one of them is has a bearing starting to go bad they can cause pulsating.

If it were a helicopter, I'd say it was ground resonance.

Interesting. I know very little about them other than what they are. How much "play" should there be in them with a hand test? When pushing the deck back onto the shaft (pain in the butt) after working on it, I notice that I can turn the shaft a few degrees with no resistance to a solid end point. I figured that was just how this one worked, but there is definitely a little looseness there...just a few degrees, but definitely noticeable.

Outside of Pittsburgh, PA. Got a place surrounded by farmland in the low hills, lots of grass to cut weekly.

That's funny, because that is what it feels like. I thought the tractor was going to start bouncing up and down and then take off. The deck definitely jumps if I let it go long enough...I've even googled "mower deck harmonics" trying to figure this out. No hits, lol.

I would think the play in the universals should be minimal to non-existent.
I know you changed the blades, but are the mower deck spindles good ? How much wobble do their bearings?

I'll check the universals, the deck gearing, and even back up into the shaft (under the seat? what to look for there?) for play later when I get home tonight. If there is play, it would explain the pulsing almost like lash in an old transmission.

The spindles are good, that was something I checked early on. Dad's old Power King lost a spindle as I was cutting when I was younger, and the resulting destruction scarred me enough that I actually check those with some regularity. Ever see a spindle go shooting off a mower deck? It's...something. If I didn't get hit with part of the belt as it tore apart, I would have thought the spindle that landed next to the deck and then accelerated across the yard was pretty neat.

From the questions, this might not be a hydraulic issue, and I'm not sure I think it even is hydraulic. I think I'm just hearing the hydraulics responding to the pulse and the root is actually mechanical...can anyone think of anything else for me to check, tug on, pry on with a bar, etc, for looseness? We are getting outside of my experience, but I really like learning about this stuff.

To check the U- joints I would try and pull them side and up & down. There should be slop in the joints. Even though it is a pain I would also remove the shaft from the tractor and just swivel the U-joints by hand they should move smoothly in all directions.

99% sure the PTO clutch is hydraulic engagement, not sure if this could feed pulses back into the hydraulic system or not.

Just spent a couple hours, here's what i found...

U joints... fine
Blades... balanced
Gear box on deck... seems ok
Belt... working fine

I was stymied, so i had the tractor in the yard, and was trying different throttle points and elevations, thinking maybe a position or speed was causing the shaft to wobble.

I at one point stood in front of the outlet while going through different combos and i noticed something. I never stand there, rocks hurt and that's just good practice to not be there. Airflow out of the deck is excellent at elevation, but when i dropped it to cutting height, the air coming out stopped and the deck started pulsing. Lifted back up, it started blowing and the pulsing stopped. So i started playing with the deck height setting, and it seems that at and below the 2" point airflow drops off and the pulsing starts.

Has anyone heard of a suction effect with a low deck?

I held a work glove in front of the outlet (shoot cover removed at this point to get a good demo) and it stands sideways in the wind with the deck raised. Let the deck down and it drops like a sail on a calm day. I've never seen anything like this before.

I put a brick under the scalp wheels on the closed side, lowered the deck... no pulse.

I might have to add air intake holes!?? Other than this is a pain, it's also kinda awesome. I'll try to get a video and post it.

I love to cut the lawn really low. I live in a valley with a creek, have a lot of natural water and the grass is healthy. I can hit full 9 irons across the back yard, so i started dropping the deck way down and to have a nice, tight lie. Evidently in doing so I'm creating a suction that is causing the pulse.

I might just use a drill to knock some intake holes on the far side, and can always cover them later.

If anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them, but i think I'm going with this for now.

Does the deck have holes that get covered with grass clippings?
Clippings can also build up on underside of deck and radically change the whole shape air/flow around the blade.
