Comparison Moving from a Ford 8N to possibly a B5200D -- what should I know?

Yea they are small.

You said he had it on c-list for $3800. For how long?? I guess that is an indication right there that it aint worth $3800 in your area.

I know others will probably flame me for this, but the B5200 aint much bigger or heavier than a garden tractor.

Now if you were going from a little riding mower to the B5200,I am sure it would feel big. But going the other way around, I think you will be disappointed.

How well do you know the guy? If you are serious, and if he is serious, see if he will let you have it for a day. Heck, even call it a rental and give him $100. IF you decide on the deal, the $100 comes off the trade price. If you dont like it, $100 is far cheaper than getting into a $3800 regret.

Don't know the guy at all. Usually the smaller 4x4 Kubotas move very fast with a loader and the ones without take longer. I am not into the 8N for too much so I figured rolling it into the 5200, and getting a loader for it, would put me ahead if I wanted to sell it.

He is about an hour away. I am actually going to be in his area this weekend -- maybe I will stop by to test drive it. I have never seen a tractor like this in person so it is hard for me to judge the size over something like Youtube.

EDIT: I also liked the smaller size because I could park it in a small barn I have. I don't think I could get the 8N to fit, or fit well, with the back blade on there. I parked the 8N outside all last winter with a tarp over it and it suffered somewhat, and when it broke down, was a bear to fix out in the cold.

I moved from an 8N to a L3940. But, I needed the pto horsepower to run a 6' finish mower, and did not want to step down in size, weight, or horsepower. Philip.

My next door neighbor uses a b2400 hydro 4x4 for snow removal in S.E. Michigan he has chains and turf tires its fine for light snow but 5-6" of wet snow and he has to make multiple passes i.e. cant drop the blade all the way because he does not have the weight to move the snow. He also claims he's near the threshold for power due to hydro. Hes looked at some smaller L40s like L3240 and L3540 That said i would probably stick with the 8N for now.

If you had a front blade it might be a different story

The B5200D should out lift the 8N. My BX would out lift the one I had. You will need weights to use the full lift capacity on the 3PH, which you did on a 8N too. The largest you will want to go on a blade for the rear is 5'. A front blade would be best for snow removal. If you get a loader a loader mounted blade would be really nice. You may be able to take a ATV or UTV plow and adapt it for use on the tractor. If that was my primary plow tractor I would want to have a set of chains for it.

Gonna take about 500# of weights up front to lift what the 8n can without any weights IMO. And cast weights around me are $1 per pound used. So another $500 just to match the 8n's lift capacity.

Either that or the loader....

Rear blade on the 5200 will not move much snow. After the first clearing the road just keeps getting narrower and narrower.

With a front bucket you can move more snow as you can pick it up and place it else where. But it is slow going.

Chains will almost be required to work easily.:)

Is 5200 hydro or gear?

I just got rid of my B2400 because I was finding it to small for most of the firewood and snow plowing duties I was giving it, now looking or the replacement...

I say pass, and look for something bigger to replace 8N
