I missed the original posting of the thread. Glad it turned out ok. I did this one for my grandparents. They were there to watch. I tried to get as much of the family together to "help" do it, but only a few could make it. It came out nice, and was much cheaper than a funeral home or monument co. doing it.
We do have a tradition in our family that we dig graves for our own family. Always by hand, no machinery. Just something my father started doing when his father died in' 83. I helped do my grandmothers grave in '00 and there will obviously be others. Just seems like the right things to do.
