I suspect this has been covered here over and over again, but I can't find anything.

My dealer tells me I have to use 10W50 PLUS 50 MOTOR OIL. what does the "PLUS 50" mean? I can find 10W50, but not "PLUS 50."

The Plus 50 oil I'm familiar with is sold by John Deere. Using the John Deere Plus 50 oil allows you to extend your oil change interval by 50 hours. It's good oil, I used it in my 6400 on the last oil change. I change oil every 100 hours or twice a year so I've never worried about the 50 extra hours.

I've always gotten a charge out of a vendor saying I have to use any particular product.

10w50 plus 50. try and find something like that at anyplace but the dealer who recommended it.. naturally that particular product costs twice as much as any other motor oil, but the price is because its better, not because they make a profit on it. LOL.

like my New Holland skidder specifying 10-w30 diesel engine oil in all drives and engine, has to be rated CF-4.

nobody selling an oil like that except them.

so I use 15W40.

CF-4 oil was Introduced in 1990 for high-speed four-stroke naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Can't understand why you can't purchase it elsewhere. As for using 15W-40, as long as it is a CF-4 oil, you should have no problems. Oil weight is only one part of the equation, the rating that is on the can is the other part of the equation. For proper lubrication, you should use the rated oil that the manufacturer specifies. Engine oils are constantly being improved, and you should know what you are using in your engine is proper for its longevity. The old adage "Oil is Oil" only applies to that coming out of the ground....:D

HillBillyFarmer,

What oil does your manual say to use. That is what you should follow.

The JD oil I have looked up is good oil. But expensive. I use Shell 5Wx40 in the JD and Ford since its the best bang for the buck for what I need. If I went to a full synthetic I might very well use the JD product since they always have it in stock at my dealer.

See what the manual says to use, check oil specs and prices then make a decision.

Later,
Dan

Manuals are great but only worth the paper they are printed on. If my manual states a CH oil I can only use that? I cannot use the newer CJ-4+?

JD is an okay oil. Way overpriced I feel; select other ones.

The manual gives the recommendations that were the latest available at the time of printing. That doesn't preclude your using an improved formula when the improved formula indicates that it supersedes the original formula. Many oil packages will have the previous standards indicated on the package along with the latest standards that they pass.

CH-4 Current Introduced in 1998 for high-speed four-stroke engines. CH-4 oils are specifically designed for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulphur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4 and CG-4.

in general you are safe using an oil with the newer rating as it supercedes and is improved over the older rating.

I know..but manuals and oil ratings are not worth anything in my eyes. I have seen oil tests that show thicker works better and sometimes thinner. I have seen HDEO work better in SJ applications etc.

My advice is take the manual as a guide if you have no idea. Most manuals, as you stated, are recommendations if at bestl not set in stone.

I love it when manufactures says, example, use 5w-30 only at xx ratinngfor years (like 15) then they put out TSB;s that state 5w-20 XX is to be used but tell no one.

Nevermind throwing in a group 3 to 5...
