Last week I got my first antique tractor - an 1950Allis Chalmers WD. In reading the owners manual I discovered the oil is supposed to be 10w in the winter and 20w in the summer. It seems to me that a good 10w30 should be good all year, but being new to this I figured I would ask. What do you use? What about synthetic?

Synthetic would be great if it doesn't leak around the main seals. The seals in new vehicles are made to hold in synthetics.

The older machines specified single weight oils because the multi-weight oils were not as good back then. I would try the multi-weight oil and keep a close eye on the level to see if it is using too much.

if in the north 10w30 should be ok, if it holds good pressure.

I'd avoid synthetic unless it was rebuilt in modern times.

this assumes it is a gasser too
