I am putting a hyd pump on a motor and was wondering if someone has a good way to aline it. I put the pump on the motor with a coupling and I was going to use a hose clamp to aline the 2 together or is there a better way. Thanks Ivan

We used small dial indicators mounted to one side of the coupler or one of the shafts to zero it in. This will get it dead on this way. Here's a picture of one but it's a little hard to see.

Most coupler's that I have seen are "flexible" or allow for some slight mis-alignment, (like a typical "spider" type coupler found on most hyd. log splitters) with the actual coupling occurring with the rubber so called "spider" making perfect alignment unnecessary.

A lot depends on the speed of the motor (1800/3600) The higher the speed the more critical the alignment. That being said, you can do the alignment with a straight edge and feeler gauges, if you don't have access to a idle indicator. You need to remember, you are trying to align 4 planes. Horizontal (angular & parallel) and vertical (angular & parallel) alignment specs for a motor/pump coupling @ 1800 rpm would be .002" in all planes.

Have you looked into pre-made mounting bracket for the motor and pump? Usually they aren't expensive.

A "Love Joy" connector is a common "spider" connector. They are commonly available to fit different sized shafts & have different sizes to accommodate different horse power ranges. There is a neoprene like material used as a cushion between the 2 halves & you leave a slight gap when mounting to decrease wear & prevent them from hitting together due to vibration movements of the motor & pump, (end play in the shafts). The 3 pieces you will need will cost around $25-30.

The pre-made pump mounts are around $80 & $30.

For my log splitter, I fabricated mine out of angle iron & flat bar stock. I several hundred hours on it without any problems.

Thanks for the help. It is up and running. Iknew there were pump spacers and I used a love joy coupling with a home made pu spacer. It is nice to have a milling machine. I use to aline them on die cast machines but did not know if the smaller ones were different or not. Again thanks
