Various people here have difference in their PT that affect how much pull the PT has. For example: bar tire/ag tire, synthetic oil in transmission and/or engine, fluids in tires, weights on back, surface differences, etc.

We all have opinions about how much these changes help, but it would be nice to have numbers to help others evaluate the affects of these differences. Does anyone have any suggestions on a standard way that we can measure this. It should be cheap and easily available to a large number of users, and repeatable.

Waiting for suggestions,

Find a huge capacity hanging scale and chain it to an imovable object and then to your PT. Put the PT on grass, concrete, sand, etc... then see how many pounds of pull it has before the tires slip or the engine stalls.

I am thinking that there will be about a 20 to 30 percent difference when testing this with a cold hyd fluid compared with hot hyd fluid.

I have to agree with JJ...as an example, I have several areas that have steep grades which require mowing...if I hit them while the fluids are cold it's relatively easy to climb the slopes while the PTO is running. Attempting to cut the grass in these areas after the oil is hot is much more challenging...wheel(s) will spin sooner/easier and chance of "bogging down" greatly enhanced.

No arguments from me. I have seen the same thing, although it is not as bad since I switched to synthetic 20w50.

Back to the question posed at the top of the thread. I've added that little picture gizmo under my name as a suggestion of one approach to a standardized approach to measuring pull. Wrap your machine around a succession of trees. Measure the size of the largest tree you can drive over/off-of befor escape requires cutting the tree down. Post size (and species) of tree to this thread. The tree in that picture required a chain saw. Cut the arm off of the driver's seat by accident in the process. oops...

The double wheels give you extra wrap. I have only cut down one tree for this. The comealong got me out the other time.

Same here - I have only cut down one tree - so far. You know when you're on a slope when it's the ROPS that wraps the tree :)

??????? With my PT-425 (Kohler), when I push or pull an immovable object, nothing happens! The tires don't spin, and the engine just slows a small amount but certainly never even approaches a stall! In over 300 hours the engine has never stalled for any reason!! Is this 'normal'? ???????
