Mothers-in-law

I have noticed that whenever one of my daughters will ask their husband to do something that the husband will say 'okay' and do the task whenever. They are a little quicker to respond if I ask them. But let my 5 foot 4 inch tall wife tell them to do something and both my sons-in-law litterally snap to attention, say "yes ma'am", and run to do what she asks. One of these boys is 6' 2" and about 200 pounds, the other 6' 7" and over 300 (not much fat on him either). It doesn't matter what they are doing they will stop and do whatever she tells them.

Daughters think this is funny.

I think is has to do with the huge meal she cooks nearly every Sunday. The deserts she fixes and sends to them probably helps. The homemade jams, jellies, and pickles probably help too.

Despite all the mother-in-law jokes that I hear this seems to be the normal relationship. My wife's mother died a few years ago and she was one of my favorite people. It seems to me that people living in the country develop a closer relationship with their inlaws that people that live in urban areas.

It surely is in our family. I've been that S-I-L for well over 30 years. For all the work I used to do at the farm, she used to pay me with fried chicken and chicken fried steak. It was a great arrangement.

And I don't think that it's only us. I once got off a speeding ticket because of my M-I-L. When the cop asked me where I was going in such a hurry, I told him that my M-I-L had called and told me that she needed her tractor picked up from the dealer where it was being fixed and I only had 30 minutes to get there. I said that when that ol' woman said "Jump", I only asked, "How high". He said, "Yea, I'm married too" and gave me a warning ticket and sent me on my way. I made it with 5 minutes to spare and family peace was maintained ... at least for a few days.

RSKY--Looks like you're settling in to retirement pretty well. It's nice to have the time to sit back and contemplate(ponder) family dynamics. I've been retired just a month and still trying to figure out how to pace myself, I don't have to get it all done today.

I enjoy the mother-in-law jokes as much as anyone, but in real life . . . well, my wife and I had been married nearly a year and a half before I met her parents but I loved them; fine people. And I've heard my mother tell others that she considered my wife as much her daughter as her own daughters. In fact, I think she and my wife enjoyed each other's company even more than my sisters did. Of course, at our age, as you would expect, all our parents are gone now, but still missed.

But as with some of you, we have two sons-in-law and I can't imagine either of them hesitating a minute to do anything my wife asks.

I am fortunate in that my wife's parents have always treated me very well from day one. They are without a doubt the nicest folks I have ever met and I have been fortunate to know them for the past 32 years. They are the main reason my wife and I stayed in the area. We see them on a weekly basis and they have a great relationship with our daughters. We sometimes vacation with them and I enjoy helping them with tasks around their house. My parents passed away many years ago and my in-laws treat me like a son. Thinking about it, I have known my mother-in-law longer than I knew my own mom. She died when I was 24 and now I'm 50.

Oh, yeah.... she's a pretty good cook, too. :licking:

I've had 3 MIL's in my life. I've gotten along with all of them. I actually have 2 at the moment because my wife has a mother and a step-mom. I still get along with my (ex) MIL even after all the rodeo her daughter and I went through. I think they are all aware that the quickest way to a man's (or young man's) heart is through his stomach!:thumbsup:

She's pretty awesome. And yeah, if she asks for something (very rarely, even though I see her often) I snap to it.

*I could have used alternate words, but the h alliteration made it. Plus, that's what she actually said.

Actually Charlie that isn't the case. I mean retirement meaning sitting back with idle time. Oldest daughter bought a house that somebody had lost. Been sitting vacant for two years and the pipes weren't drained. Guess who replumbed that house while his wife painted nearly the entire interior. Oh and repaired the floor, fixed the roof, etc. Got them moved in the new house and now we are getting the old one ready to sell. Put down a laminate floor in one room today while repainting part of the room, burning the old carpet, etc. Left home at 9 am, got back 8pm.

Kids aren't slacking off. Daughter teaches, is on site based school committee, and has won a contest that had an author of one of the most popular children's book series come to the school. Son in law working full time, is volunteer fireman, and works on the houses every minute he can.

Wife and I love doing the handy man jobs. But we have been at this for over two months now.

All my in-laws are fantastic and will do anything for me. Best of all, they are almost 9000 miles away in the Philippines. No everybody loves raymond accross the street.
