Got a cheap 5000W generator I had for years, one of my farms has no power and I saw the 125A gas-stick at Sams for $1200.00+ and wondered if there might be the way to go since I all ready have part. Rather have stick and would like to be able to do repairs on my attachments. Anything out there that would work?

I'm not really sure what you're asking ...
I don't know what welder you're talking about at Sam's but, I, as well as others, have run a classic 220 amp AC Lincoln tombstone off a 5KW el cheapo generator with no probs. I guess the bottom line is, you could run most any welder off a 5KW genny but maybe not at max output ...

Cheers!

Never heard of a gas-stick welder especialy for 1200 bucks - ouch.
Maby it's a MIG but 125 amp mig for $1200 is too high as well. Need more info on the welder.

However to try and answer your question:
5000 watts @ 220 volts = 22.72 amps at full load.

I would need to know the voltage output of the AC welder to calculate how many amps you could actually weld at.

Lets say that as an example using the SWAG* method the output of the welder is about 32 volts @ 125amps - close to where you would use a 6011 rod on 1/4" thick steel.

32v x 125a = 4000 watts.

*= Scientific Wild A$$ Guess.

It is a gasoline powered welder not shielding gas!

I'm confused. if you are looking at a gas powered stick welder.. then why are you wondering if your 5000w genny will be 'ok'.. since it isn't needed??

I think I'd go for a plain stick welder and use it.. just keeping in mind that at somewhere around 50% setting ( if a big buzzbox) that you will run out of generator..

Liked the combo welder, did not like the price!!!

What I am trying to find out is there a stick welder out there that matches my genny without trying to run a tombstone at half power? If so would it be enough to do minor repair on attachments?

What does it matter if you run a tombstone at half capacity? It only does what the input side will let it do. Too much draw and something has to give. At least the tombstone will take a little abuse, of under voltage, etc before giving up the ghost.

As far as the guess-a-ment, open current voltage can go as high as 80v open current, so that drops the operation of anything of any size down on a 5k generator. However, just because it "can" go that high, doesn't mean that it is.
Experience is the key here. I have none.

I have experience here. I run my Lincoln AC225 tombstone stick welder with my coleman 5500 watt continuous/6850 surge generator.

I have welded up bulldozer grousers and anything else with this combination even at full power without blowing the generator breaker. Note that most welding of 1/4"-3/8" mild steel is done in the 120 amp range with AC stick.

"keeping in mind that at somewhere around 50% setting ( if a big buzzbox) that you will run out of generator.."

AC welding is done at 25 volts, so 25 volts at nearly the max setting of 200 amps is only 5000 watts. Yes, you will lose a little steam for efficiency but the transformer is pretty dang efficient. You can use almost all the buzzbox has to offer.

I have never been limited with the 5500 coleman and AC225 buzzbox. The AC225 buzzbox is really cheap too.

Highbeam,

Does your Coleman have a 50 amp receptacle? I have the 225AC also but my generator only has a 30 receptacle. Or did you change to a 50?
