These logs are aspen with a diameter about 15 to 16 inches.

A PT 1445 weighs 3920 lbs.

Even a 1400 lb PT 425 will pick up a pretty good sized tree, as some of Fourteen's pics shows. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well, I have a task that I overestimated and won't be able to complete with my 180. It isn't so much that the 180 failed me, it is either I ran out of time, or I didn't manage it properly, or both. I was digging out of a hill side to fill in my pool. I've finished about 1/3 of the pool, but now we are moving earlier than expected and have to sell the property fast. I'm buying fill dirt to finish the pool and scrambling to make the hill side that I dug out pretty with a terracing wall.

I thought that it would go much faster than it did, and underestimated how much dirt it would actually take.

Yes, I believe we have all done that once in our lives. Cubic yards are huge. 3 feet wide by 3 feet deep by 3 feet tall. My first venture into moving large amounts of soil was digging out a driveway entrance into a hillside along a highway. I had no choice but to put the driveway there... state demanded it. Several contractors wanted 5K to do it. Instead of that, I bought a large old tractor/loader for 5K and did it myself. Ended up moving over 100 cubic yards of sand and gravel, as well as the top soil and trees that were on top of it. I thought it would take a couple of days. I spent many a weeknight and weekend doing that project. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif The only bonus was that when it was all over, I still had a tractor to brush hog our tree plantation with and spread 100 yards of slag for the road. Looking back, if I had to do it over again, I would have hired it out. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think that's how we all accumulate "wisdom"... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

After "playing with" small machines and their loaders for a couple of years, when it came time to do final lot clearing and driveway excavation on my lot, I didn't hesitate to call in the "pros"...

The "school of hard knocks" isn't fair at all -- it always gives you the test before it tells you the answers... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ha! I knew it! The tests are biased towards the gifted kids! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

As one of my mentors said:

"Sound judgment is based on wisdom. Wisdom is the accumulation of all one's prior judgments." I think there'e something to it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
