Mosquitos

I like the bug lights. I'd like them better if they could discriminate between 'good' insects and mosquitoes.

My wife had Dr Oz on the television a couple of days ago, he suggested to use lemongrass oil as insect repellant. Apparently it has natural citronella.

I suppose it's worth a try. Has anyone used this??

No applied on me but burned as a candle. Back in the city the mosquitoes were as bad as the Everglades. People let the gutters fill up with leaves, which then held water which then made mosquitoes. Then there was all of the stuff left outside that held water.... The mosquitoes were really bad.

Going outside in the summer was just aweful. Worse than FLA. Working in the garage with the doors open was a bug feeding fest. But I was the food. I would burn a couple of citronella candles but they did not stop the feeding frenzy. Who, know maybe they just had a spec of citronella.

I would try it but make sure you have back up if the stuff fails. :D Like running back into the house.

Garlic.......I like that idea. My wife the 1st Generation Italian-American would like it too. It may work on mosquitos, but the best side effect is it will make her frisky. In our house there's no such thing as Too much garlic

Charlie

Another reason to eat me some Garlic:thumbsup::D

I also use Deepwoods OFF works for most bugs too (ticks, chiggers), as far as I can tell. We have tried those "mosquito" plants and the wife has gone crazy with the citronella candles, so far Deep woods with DEET has be most effective.

It also keeps the wife off me too, good for fish'n:laughing: gotta stay "focused".

Look on the label -- if it says 28% deet it will work and other than devices which heat a repellant or the new Off product is the only thing to have been scientifically proven to work. More than 28% deet is a waste of deet and less does not last as long. Skin so Soft, Listerine, citronella, Skintastic, Crysanthymum extract etc have been proven not to work for any reasonable length of time. Vitamin B works somewhat but only to the extent that another mammal is nearby that smells better to the female mosquito (only the females bite)
One thing that does work is to be with someone who attracts them more than you -- then you just have to put up with two whining noises -- the mosquitos and your companion:D

I have read reviews of the new clip-on OFF product. They seem to say that it really does work. If you are allergic to DEET or just don't like it, this is a viable solution. I plan to try them this summer, but have not purchased any yet.

Skin-so-soft only repels mosquitos as they try to bite you. They get oily guk in their mouths. It does nothing to protect you from mosquitoes biting you through clothing or unapplied areas like the repellants do. I have seen tests done on TV and DEET based products beat SSS hands-down.

I tried these clip on things....no luck at all. Here in Alabama we have a pretty healthy "skeeter" crop.

We have a 27' above ground pool, inset into our deck. Around the deck railing I have 4 tiki torches on each side. As long as I have the citronella oil burning in the torches - its bug free. Plus it's a nice ambiance.

I use to fish at Emerson Point in Manatee County, Florida. The point is where the Manatee River and Tampa Bay converge. I used to fish the "Flats" bordering the mangrove lined banks. The "Skeeters" love to gather around the mangroves, especially near dusk. I have used the Avon Ever So Soft before while fishing in Florida. I put a mixture of 50/50 in a spray bottle. The smell never bothered me, but removing the potion in the shower took a little extra soaping and rinsing. I loved fishing there, plenty of Reds, Seatrout and Snook, especially with the tides at Full Moon and New Moon.

+1 on the military DEET.

Actually, the best repellent for me is to have my wife nearby...she's a magnet for any sort of insect, so they all bother her & leave me alone. ;)

I do wish they made something that worked on black flies (gnats) other than a head net.

I tried them at the last place I lived. They certainly caught a lot of mosquitoes, but didn't seem to make much of a dent in the population. I'd only get about 1 year out of one before the high voltage transformer would go bad.

Surprisingly, they're not too bad where I live now. The bats seem to keep them under control.

Bird,
My brother-in-law works construction and swears Listerine works to repel mosquitos. He says he puts a drop on his head, neck, a couple on each arm and legs, etc... and it works. I have yet to try it as I still use Off. If you're in the experimenting mode, give it a try and let us know how it works.

My daughter was on the golf team in high school. She used the Off in the orange can. It smelled more like oranges. It worked pretty well. I used it to when I'd go watch her play matches. We liked it so much we usually keep 3-4 cans around the house now.

When I work at our remote property or go camping/hiking, I take the deep woods Off in the green can. It works very well.

We also keep some mosquito netting in gallon zip lock bags that I soak with the deep woods off before we go camping. It keeps it saturated.

Around here Lime disease is a real concern, so we load up with the bug spray if we're going out morning or evening.
