mosquito traps

Maybe my search skills are poor... Tried to find ratings/comments about mosquito traps and came up empty. I read somewhere on the net that the technology continues to improve. Can anyone lead me to current research on models, prices, etc.?

With West Nile about and lots of outdoor activities ahead, we're thinking of springing for a catcher of some kind. I've read that different models may be effective with some of the 75 known mosquito varieties, but not others. Thanks for the help in advance.

If you're just doing it for west nile protection save your money. West Nile is here to stay. We aren't going to get rid of it. Your best defense, provided you are in good health, is to acquire immunity. You do this by being bitten. Most people don't even know they've been exposed to it, like millions of other viruses and bacteria our bodies come into contact with every day. At worst you will get a case of what you think is the flu. Now if you are older or immune compromised that's a different story.

I don't own one of these, but I've been thinking about getting one...living in the woods means plenty of bugs during the summer.

My aging failing memory seems to recall reading an article that stated most mosquito traps tended to attract more mosquitos into the imediate area thus increasing the problem rather than alleviating it.

It also seems to recall a breeding period of around 6 to 10 days for the female which is a little different than stated in the advertizement.

Please note: This data may not be verifiable but merely something I seem to recall.

We've been casually looking into getting one of these. One of the things that I read was that mosquitos don't move around that much. I don't remember the estimated range but it wasn't that large. Of course I believe I read this out of the original Mosquito Magnets sales literature so I'm not too sure how accurate it is.

Best way to get them sceeders? BATS! Buy a few bat houses, and set them up. Bats are not the monsters we have been brought up to think. They eat many thousands of bugs per bat every night. Some times natures ways are the best. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bats are a great way to go. We set up two houses for them. With the bats and taking care of standing water issues skeeters are far and few between. Its also kind of cool to hear them work.

We have bats flying around at dusk already and we're happy about their contribution. Our daughter has been cautioned about approaching any that allow it -- she understands the dangers, too. I agree, Nature is best, but...

Good to see a post from you again, Egon. Where are my rocks? If it ever stops raining this year, I have big plans to start the landscaping projects and those boulders on your land are desirable. I'll give you directions when you get them loaded.

I think your aging memory may be right; I've come across a "primer" on mosquito traps that suggests a danger of attracting more to the area. School is still out apparently. I was shocked at the price tag of some of these. Is is because of West Nile, a fad, or what?

I've been very consitent in handing out misinformation over the winter. Your rock pile awaits you. It is best to split in place so you don't haul unusable rock around.

Was going to do it this winter but there was to much snow. then, as a final kicker couldn't go skiing as I developed a bum knee and doctor said no. Had day surgery in April to remove part of a frayed miniscual pad or whatever and its almost back to normal. Damage was probaby caused by just thinking about carrying around your tool box!!!

Searching MY aging memory, wasn't it you who suggested a minimal toolbox with focus on large crescent wrenches. Well, I bought some nice sockets, a small sledge hammer, a torque wrench, etc. After little use, I've come to the conclusion that.............I need to get a couple of crescent wrenches to keep on the tractor.... Don't gloat!

When we lived in Arizona sitting on the back porch in the evenings watching the bats fly this way and that way while drinking a cold one was a great way to spend an evening.
