I've got to do some pointing on a field stone foundation. I've gotten some technical advice from the National Register about what to use: 2p Portland Cement, 3p Lime and 6p Sand. These ratios are recommended for color and hardness.

Will Home Depot - Lowes have this material?

They only thing I've ever mixed like this is quick crete. Anyone know how much moisture to add? Just a feel thing? I wanna use a Grout bag too, but have never seen one of these things. Gotta get squirted into deep spaces between stones.

Quikcrete makes a Portland. Comes in a 94lb. sack. Lime would be in the garden area I think; it is at my lowe's anyway. Mortar needs to be about peanut butter thickness. Should come off the trowel good but not just run off.

As WHarv has taught us, when mixing masonry products, add water from a bucket so one can see how much one added. Never use a hose directly.

A grout bag looks like one of those bags that a cake decorator uses, just bigger. Should be over with the concrete trowels. Might mix the mortar a little thinner but I've never had to use a bag so I might be wrong. The cake people fill the bag, grab the top closed and twist it to make the icing come out, I presume mortar works the same.

By lime, do they mean Masonry lime (mortar?).

Home Depot/Lowe will have Mortar. Bought it there before. They only have gray though.

Good luck with that grout bag. I bought one and had a heck of a time getting the mortar the right consistency to make it work. Finally just used a pointing trowel for the work I was doing.

I did get the grout bag at Home Depot but don't remember if it was in the masonry section or the tile area. I would try to mix some small amounts and giving it a try before mixing a full batch.
