Montana R4344HST PTO switch

Montana 4344HST.

PTO switch has 3 positions. Off (right), Independent (missle) and On (left)

Tractor will not start unless in middle independent position. When in this position PTO does not turn or engage. The off position does absolutely NOTHING. PTO only engages in the "On" position.

What is the purpose of the independent and off position and what is the independent SUPPOSED to do.

P.S. I LOVE THE OWNERS MANUAL. Looks like a 6th grade foreign language student translated it.

On a gear driven tractor, you have the option of Independent, Off, or Manual. The difference is that in one the clutch controls the PTO. When you are working and push the clutch the wheels quit driving and the PTO stops spinning. When the switch is in Independent and you push the clutch the wheels stop driving but the PTO continues to Spin.

On a HST tractor it might be hooked up to the forward speed somehow or it might be that they use the same switch to cut down on parts inventory or some one just put the wrong switch in your tractor??

Sorry I can't help with your tractor, I never really thought about the way a HST drives the PTO, I hope some one else answers with a for sure answer.
