Montana 4540
Hi everyone. I am new here and I've been going round and round with the PTO on my Montana 4540. About a year and half ago I was bush hogging a field behind one my properties. I didn't notice a drain culvert right in the middle cause the brush was so tall and I drove the darn tractor right into it. We made some repairs, had the tractor split and everything. Ever since, the PTO would not disengage. It just ran all the time. Quite dangerous when hooking up the bush hog I might add. We ran it like that for a while. Now about 4 months ago the PTO stopped working altogether. I've checked all the obvious stuff. The switch on the dash is good and I am getting power to the solenoid down behind the right foot plate. Whatever the solenoid is suppose to engage, it's not engaging it. I talked to Montana about it and he said very rarely does something mechanically break inside. He said it's more than likely and electrical issue. Any thoughts or solutions on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Well wish I could be of help, I have not had any problems with the 4340C PTO .. I am inclined to think that Montana is right. I would be thinking the solenoid it self is bad ... sounds like it was stuck for a year or so making it run and now finaly gave out where it won't do either engage or disengage.

I did find this online ... PTO SOLENOID VALVE TEST NOTE Engine must be running and PTO control switch placed in the on position to perform this test. (1) Place positive (+) probe of multimeter on PTO solenoid valve. (2) Place negative (-) probe of multimeter on ground and look for 22-28 volts on multimeter.

Thank You BlueRiver. I will try this in the morning, since I already have the back wheel off, and I will get back to you. Any tips on getting the solenoid off from behind the wheel lock pedal? I need about 1/4 inch more play in the pedal to get that sucker off.
