Well, after removing the FEL and being amazed how easy this process is, I am going to remove my mmm next time I want to do some digging. I'm pretty sure I saw a grease fitting where the mmm drive shaft connects to the mid PTO. Seems to me that this is going to become a mess with dirt if it isn't covered. Do they make a cover or does anyone have something they do to prevent having to completely clean it before re installation?

Interesting question.
I just put up my MMM for the season and was wondering the same thing.
I have a B7500.

My tractor came with a cover over the mid-PTO and I've yet to take it off. It looks like a thin stamping with a couple of ears for small bolts to hold it on. My rear PTO has similar bolt holes on the housing, but no cover. Hope this helps /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Jeff396,

I have just purchased my BX2200 with FEL & MMM. When I removed the MMM, I too was curious about a cover for the mid PTO. Yesterday, I stopped by the dealer and asked if there was a cover. He informed me that he did not know of such an item. However, if you find out something different please let us know.

I have a cover for my L3010HST for the mid PTO. The dealer ordered it for me when I asked about a cover when it was delivered. The rear PTO had a piece of plastic directly on the shaft.

Same thing for me with my L3710. I have a metal cover for the mid PTO and a rubber one for the rear PTO. The metal one attaches with a bolt.

I just shot off an email to my dealer asking about mmm pto cover for both BX2200 and B7500. I'll let you know when I hear something.

Got word back from my dealer and he says the same thing. There is no mid pto cover available. He also had his guy look around to see if there was something else we could use but everything was too large. I went down to take another look at the connection of the drive shaft to the pto shaft and I think I was mistaken about the grease fitting. The grease fitting I was thinking about was one on the actual drive shaft in the middle so as the mower goes up and down the shaft shortens and lengthens. Question is, are we supposed to grease the pto shaft because if not it may not be as much of a problem as I thought it would be. As long as you keep out of REALLY deep mud!!!! Maybe when I finally take the MMM off I can come up with something that will fit. The dealer suggested something on the line of a bicycle handlebar grip.

How did you make out with covering the shaft on your MMM?

Most of the time my BX has the MMM removed. I only install it when mowing at which time I remove the FEL and Boxblade. I have never had a problem with the mid PTO drive. I do not cover it and as of yet other than brushing some dirt off it and swiping it with a light coat of grease upon reinstallation of the MMM I have done nothing else.
With the MMM removed the BX has considerably more practical ground clearence and it saves wear and tear on the deck.
I saw some pics of JD's new 400 and 500 tractors. I am not impressed. It appaears they do have a larger front wheel/tire but do not have bevel gear type 4WD--do they just use a universal joint there?? Anyway--if this is really their answer to the BX I won't be going green with envy any time soon. J
