Is it okay to mix Pennzoil Platinum and Mobil 1 in a car? They are both 0-20W.

I have heard that you are not supposed to mix different brands of synthetic as the additives can be different and not jive well.
But I am sure people do it all the time and dont give it a second thought.
Why are you wanting to mix anyway?? can you just get a few more quarts of each, and use one brand this time and another next??

I have not mixed those two but never had a problem over the years mixing brands/classes of engine oil. Myths and facts get mixed together all of the time.

i would not think too much about having to buy a quart to add half of it to make up for a fitler change / top off.. etc.. however i surely wouldn't buy 3 of each and mix them on a full oil chenge.. etc.
IE.. if I was a quart low on the side of the road and i needed oil.. i'd for sure put in a syn oil over a dino oil, if I already had syn oil in there.. etc.

I usually buy in the 5qt jugs. This last time the Pennzoil was cheaper so I got that. Then I found a a jug of Mobil1 with a couple quarts left in it. I was wondering if I could mix them of not. I will just pick up a couple more quarts of the Mobil1 to finish that off. Definitely cheaper than a new engine should something not be compatible.

If there were failures due to mixing different brands of motor oil that meets the manual specs there would be a lot of lawsuits.

I dont think it will matter. A guy here at work talks about mixing oils. this seems crazy to me? I think its along the same path that the myth that you cant mix syn and regular oil, what are semi syn oils in that case?

Concern used to be with the different additives and or detergents used in oils was that one brand may cause the sludge to break loose and block oil passages etc. With todays more modern oils I don't believe this is a concern.

look at an oil change going from dino to syn.
probbaly still got at least a quart of the old clung to engine parts and in gallies.

There is hardly ever an issue in mixing brands of oil, as long as they are the same classification... i.e. like both being CJ-4 or CI-4+, etc. Mixing oils of different classifications would be ok as an emergency thing to add oil to an engine to get it to where you could change it out, but as part of a regular oil change? That is not a good idea.
