Here in CA, I have a hard enough time finding a station with any kind of diesel, never mind off-road diesel... Are there certain types of stations that carry off-road?

Sorry to be eight weeks late in responding. I apologize for overlooking this thread.

Maybe it varies from state to state, but in Kansas and Missouri, the dye was injected at the pipleline distribution terminal, aka, the loading rack, as it went on the truck. This was in 1994, the last time I hauled fuel. Maybe it's changed since then.

hey billboe, I buy mine from a citco station but it's the only one i know of. there is a conoco in my town that sells it but it's hi priced even without the tax so i buy where it's cheap. i lived in ca all my life and i don't remember seeing off road diesel at a gas station but i also didn't have a need for it then.

Putting "off-road" fuel is definitely a no-no! Only because of the taxes added for over the road diesel.

Roy,
It's only illegal for vehicles not tractors and such.

Ches, I hope by now you've straightened that sales person out or at least talked to the owners.
Here, near Raleigh, I get 5gals of the off-road all the time, right nextdoor to a police station.
Federal law?? I understand, the fedreral highway taxes involved, but to set a minimum on the fill-up sounds strange.

According to a web site someone linked to on this fine forum I read that there are actually two government agencies who want you to "dye' fuel.

The first is the IRS who collects the road tax. The IRS wants dye added to diesel that did not collect road tax.

The second is the EPA who doesn't want 'high sulfur' fuel use on road. The EPA wants dye added to high sulfur fuel.

There was an interesting discussion of how to address the needs of both agencies with one dye.

Correct. I used to work for Mobil Oil Corp. The die is added while loading into the truck.

Its been a while, but I believe that No2 fuel is commonly used for home heating oil. Therefore, no die is added.
