mini rod
I have heard pro's and con's regarding full spools for mini rod pullers. My intent was to use a chevy 10 bolt rear I have with a full spool and aftermarket axles. My concern is lack of control if one side hooks better than the other. Would a posi set-up be better? Input and comments please.

Well the full spool is the strongest.

Can you use steering brakes with a posi?

You need an open differential to steer with the brakes, posi or spool will not work. What clubs are running minis? Pulled big block minis with keystone mini mods many years ago.

I pull with Rude Dog Puller. The track we pull at is in Newberrytown ,Pa. Just south of Harrisburg. We just started a class for mini rod pullers, so far there are 3 pulling 4 more being built. cu.in limit is 410 naturally aspirated.

Brutismax I understand the concept of the brakes on a spool. but why are guys welding the gears. Are the basically doing the same as a spool

they can't steer it if it's welded. cheap way of doing it

So if I have a chevy 10 bolt with a posi set-up I should use it. correct?

I wouldn't, how are you going to steer it with the front end off the ground

Ok, maybe I'm being a little thick headed, or I'm just missing the point.

If you use a limited slip your not getting all your power to the track.
If you use a spool or weld the gear your not going to be able to break steer and the same with a posi set-up.

What am I missing to be able to use break steer or is it a coin toss.

I would pick posi. or spool

Posi or spool is not what you need. Minis have individual brakes on the rear so you can steer with the front end in the air. We and everyone else in our club ran open differentials, under power both wheels will pull. A 10 bolt is not going to last very long behind any serious horsepower. If you are staying with a small block use a 9 inch ford rear and you wont have any trouble with it. Cheaper to do it now than find out later.

look on pulloff page or midnight mistress pulling site, they have for sale pages. see if you can buy rolling chassie be much cheaper than building.
