Hi guys, I need some help here. I plan on building a mini barn with a gambrel roof that is 8x16. Yes I know it should be called a shed, but until I build a large barn, I'll call it a mini barn.

Here's my question. I plan on using a true grambrel roof. I also want to use metal or galvalume for the roof. Not counting looks or the "proper way" , wouldn't placing the metal length wise, from front to back, directly on the rafters be the easiest way? And if this way is posible, as most sheds have this, will the metal roof be able to "wrap" around the corners of the gambrel roof? Rafters will be 24"oc. Also should I add a ridge pole. I live on the gulf coast, so roof loads arent a problem. Its keeping the roofs attached that we worry about.

Thanks for the help.-Neil

I wouldn't place the sheeting directly on the rafters or 'the wrong way' for a few reasons:

- ribs would hold water and dirt, you will quickly have stains lining the ribs
- steel roofing should have proper support, 24" OC probably won't be enough unless you get a heavier gauge
- if wind load is a concern you would want better than 24" OC
- easier to align your rafters using strapping or sheeting rather than steel
- strapping or sheeting will add strength to your structure; roofing and screws are not intended for stressed skin design
- Bending the steel over the hip or ridge will not fit very tight, you will end up with a sloppy hip
- it would look like crap to have the ribs running lengthwise

I have built several mini-barns like this; if you can afford to, the best method would be to sheet the rafters with 1/2 ply then put steel on it. This would also make it easier to bug/bee proof the eaves.

If you make the rafters properly you won't need a ridge pole.

Cheers,
Mike

I built a 16X20 shed with gambrel roof - metal.
I'd also vote against running the metal opposite for reasons already mentioned. We used purlins on the rafters to attach the metal.
