deciding which one
My wife and I are thinking of negotiating for a Heavily wooded tract mainly for the view on the south end and the privacy. I saw the Terex-ASV PT-100 Forestry with ASV Mulcher on a youtube video and was blown away. Suddenly it looked as though maybe I could buy this thing, put in a few months of work (being retired) and then still have a nice skid loader. Then I saw the post by Bill Tallman entitled "ASV/Terex is killing my business!" and thought it pretty scary. I'm hoping that with Terex buying ASV maybe some of the durability issues may have been worked out since Mr. Tallman rightly expressed his frustration. Any thoughts? And if things have gotten better do I really have to pony up for a brand new one?

Welcome to the forum!!

If you want to clear them and not have stumps rot and have depressions were they were.
Have an excavating contractor to push them over whole root tree and all.
You can buy a tractor and do it your self just be careful.

Push them in to piles to be cut for fire wood or to be burnt. Make a few smaller piles rather than one big one if you can burn them. This is so you don't bight off more than you can chew.

Pushing them over with the tree intact gives the leverage to get the most out of the ground.
It can be done with a track hoe or track loader even a good dozer operator can coax them out.

If it is smaller stuff a root rake on a tractor will make short work of them. or a good operator on a track loader can use the teeth to comb the under brush out and get rid of it.

Thanks for the reply Tom! We had been thinking of doing just that but when I said heavily wooded I didn't mean enormous. We'll probably just keep the really big ones. But the 5-15 ft trees are so thick that it just wares you out to walk into it for 50 yards! That's why the youtube video looks like a dream come true. One thing though are the rocks. You never see sales videos hitting any softball sized rocks. I noticed that you have a Kubota. I definitely want one of those.

Might be a good idea to get a couple estimates for the clearing from a couple local contractors. I presume you are looking at installing a driveway and building a house. With a house comes a septic system and a water well. If you have any large trees to remove in your clearing areas for the above items, you need the stumps gone, not just mulched especially if they are very large trees. If you have not cleared land before, you may not want the building site to be your first try at it. Maybe a future barn area, but not the house and septic area, again depending on the size of the trees and scope of the work. Good luck.

Welcome and congratulations on being in a position that would allow you to buy that much land. I don't know what land goes for in your area but around here that would pretty much wipe out my life savings.

Welcome from Broken Arrow. I don't have any advise for you, just saying you picked a pretty part of the state to make your land purchase. Good luck.

I know what you mean, bikerdib. The most expensive land here is the property that has spring fed creeks and has pastures. .This has no pasture or even very much flat land for that mater, no spring fed creek, is 100% forested, and has multiple structures that will have to be removed. A lot of work but not that much money. We'll build a very modest house with a pole barn. There is also enough flat land for my wife's garden and our orchard can be on a hill. I've always wanted to brew apple cider. Guess I should have just introduced myself instead of jumping in with a question. Thanks to everyone for your welcome. I probably should have just tried to contact Bill Tallman, whom I mentioned earlier. Now, to figure out how...
