What is the best way to check the compression on a JD x500?

Take the spark plug out, insert a compression tester and crank engine.

Sorry that seemed so blunt, just simple as I could answer. You can get a compression tester at any automotive parts store, they probably have a loaner program for tools like that , do in my area.
