I have thought about making a longer middle arm on my box blade instead of buying a separate machine for the few times a year I might need it. The only downside is shear protection. Any Ideas?

you could make the shaft into 2 peices and put it together side by side. one going up into the boxblade and other going down to the middle buster. put in a 1 shear bolts to hold it in place and other grade 8 to allow it to swing back and not lose the peice.

Sounds like Radioman has a good idea, I might try it myself.

I have done that with moderate success.
I made a couple of them using a longer box blade shank. I ripped with the longer stock scarifier first, then put on an even more extended "middle buster" and finally a "furrower" after that. I snapped all of them off except the longer stock scarifier shank. I had to add a "stop block" so when the shank was pushed towards the rear, the stop block hit the blade inside the box blade. It added a tremendous amount of support. Only thing to remember is not to make any turns or the sideways pressure will still snap it off.

I have some photos posted in this thread starting on post #1286.
Making a Boxblade Middle Buster for Trenching
It is in my Log Home and Barn Thread. They have worked well with the added support and not snapped off since I did that. In that thread, I installed all the North lawn irrigation. I just got through installing the South lawn irrigation and I was able to use the furrower without using the other two because the ground was still soft from recent rains. In that thread there are more photos, but here are a couple. The first two photos show the stop I added after breaking the middle buster and furrower. The last two show them before.
