Hello,

I used the tractor over the summer for brush hogging and it ran fine. I started it up about a week ago and now it's billowing white smoke like a chimney fire out the exhaust.

I shut it down and let it cool off and checked the oil level to find that it was quite low. I topped it off and it makes no difference in the smoking. Since I had no choice I had to run it and it's still burning the oil and we just keep it topped off.

I had my cousin check all four cylinders and he says the pressure is about 120 in all four cylinders dry and cold engine. With oil they are 150 to 180 so the compression seems fine from what I can find on the internet.

We are thinking it's most likely valve related. Would you all suggest we start with the valve guides, seals, etc? Or is there an easier possible culprit we are overlooking?

Thanks!

Squirt some oil in the cylinders and recheck.

He did check the engine with oil squirted in the cylinders and got 150 - 180. Are you saying to do that again? Thanks.

If you went from 120 to 180 your rings are gone. My bad for not seeing that.

Dang, was hoping it wasn't that! Oh well, guess we'll just have to tear it down eventually and verify it. Thanks!

White smoke might be steam if your head gasket is blown. I wonder if the oil-in-the-cylinder test merely plugged up the leak temporarily and restored the pressure until the oil burned off or got washed away and then you had another route by which pressure could escape.

I would much rather have to replace a head gasket than a set of rings, cylinders or valves.

head gasket......mine did that after overheating baling hay..... if you need to overhaul now would be a good time other wise take the head off and replace the gasket.

if it is steam.. do the head gasket. migth get away with honing the cyls, and re-ringing. maybee toss a set of bearing shells in. mains and rods.. etc. same as came out.. just not worn..e tc. you know they will fit. no plastigauge needed...
