I decided to service my 2006 MF1540 myself this time.

I'm discovering my owners manual isn't as accurate as I'd like

Seems the tractor's 4x4 front axle doesn't have the "level check plug" referenced for determine fluid level.

What I have is an odd shaped filler plug that I'm wondering if it's supposed to function as a dip-stick?

Can anyone help me with the procedure for checking the front axle fluid level?

Thanks, Gary

Wrong place, but I don't know how to move it...

You need to call your dealer and order the correct manual for your tractor.
Ask for manual # 1449576M4

On page D-12, Fig 15 it states:
"Oil level should be to the middle of the axle shaft."

So, you pull the filler cap that you posted a pic of,
Then shine a flashlight straight down into the hole.
There you will see the axle shaft.

There is also a pic of the oil drain plug.
Get the manual.....

Thanks! I will order the manual you reference.

This morning, lacking any other info, I filled with the amount specified (7.9qts). I'll check the level as you described and drain any extra…

Does your manual give the fluid amount as 7.9 qts?

Yes it does.

Do you recommend level or amount? Level was above the shaft at 6 qts, about where I stopped adding. 7.9 will easily be at the fill-hole threads (why I thought the plug might be a dipstick). I can’t say I got all the old fluid, but it drained overnight from both drain holes.

There is a drain at each wheel hub and at the top of the hub there’s a plug and you should fill the axel until oil comes out of the plug. If you didn’t drain the hub you didn’t get all the oil out.

here is a pic

That's the picture in my manual. However, plug #1 does not exist on my tractor…

Not a great pic, but that's where plug #1 should be...

I drained #3 on both sides, and filled at #2.

7.9 qts (as called for) brings the level to the threads on plug #2...
