MF1020 Hydro with leading rear end...thoughts?

Hey folks:

I've run across this guy for sale...they're asking $5500.

MASSEY FURGUSON 1020 1991; 20 HP; MFWD; HYDRO TRANS; 1014 LOADER; 540 RPM; 13.6X16 REAR; 25X8.5X14 FRONT; STANDARD 3 PT HITCH; OIL LEAK RIGHT REAR END

I'm curious about the oil leak at the right rear end. I've called and they can't tell me much about it other than there's a puddle under the right rear end. So, what are the chances that this is something minor (like maybe a seal or something?) versus something major (like a hydrostatic tranny replacement or rebuild?). Does anyone know these machines well enough to give me an idea of what might be the issue, and maybe worst case/best case?

If this is relatively minor, then this seems like quite a good price for a compact 4wd tractor/loader.

Any thoughts appreciated!

They are pretty tough little tractors. I know three people that have that model. I would say to check to see if you can see a break or a crack. If you can tell for sure that it has neither. Then I would say that the problem is more than likely just a gasket leaking. If it is a gasket, then make sure that movement of the housing hasn't damaged something else. Most places, the housing would have to have quite a bit of movement to cause very much collateral damage. Most dealers will check a tractor out for a small fee. If you are not sure that you can tell what is wrong, get a dealer to check it out.

Thanks for the post. It's actually at a dealership right now, but they say their shop is so booked that they haven't had time to look at it. Might have to pass on this one and just keep watching...not sure how to motivate them to give it a look!

Just tell them that if they can get it in the shop and tell you what is wrong with it, that you are seriously thinking about purchasing it. That usually gets a fire under them.
