I have recently came into a MF 231. I have never owned a Massey. I have owned several tractors. I have ordered a parts and service manual, but would like to start some projects on the machine and would like to ask a few questions pls. The tractor looks rough but runs fine.
1. There are two handles for lowering and raising the 3 point. I assume that one is for draft and one to raise and lower. I cannot read the writing and do not know how to set them. One has a round knob and the other has a square plastic knob on the end. I think I know what draft is, but I don't need it. Where would I set these knobs so that one of them operates the three point (raise and lower)?
2. Is the oil fill location on the left hand side of the tractor (from a seated poistion) near the front? This fill tube is located just in front of and a little higher than the oil filter, but looks to be a resevoir for something. It doesn't just fill into the block in other words.
3. The power steering hoses were broken off at the steering cylinders on each side (all 4 of them) and the powering steering obviously doesn't work. I will get 4 new hoses pressed and reattached. Will this system bleed itself after filling with oil? What oil do I use? Anything I should know before replacing the hoses and filling with oil?
4. SAE 30 or 15w40 engine oil?
5. Guages....Tach is broken...Temp guage I do not like and the fuel guage MIGHT work as the needle appears to be floating around....I don't need a fuel guage. I will buy a temp and oil pressure guage and a new tach....I know how to trace down and replace the tach and tach cable....I know how to replace the temp guage....The tractor currently does not have a oil pressure guage and I do NOT know where to make this connection on the engine. Can you tell me where to connect?
I picked the tractor up Friday. It has been sitting for quite some time, but it fired up first try....I now have all of the skin off for repainting....The fenders are rusted beyond repair. I have searched and searched for replacements and cannot locate for MF 231...Any suggestions for online purchase?
I am going to spray down with degreaser and pressure was the frame for new gray paint.....Anything I should be aware of before hitting with pressure washer (starter and alternator should be avoided I assume)???????
Thanks for your help. I really like this site.
