I don't believe any of the Perkins AD3.152 engines had glow plugs. I could be wrong on the later models like your MF231, but my two MF245s do not have glow plugs.

Edit: I am seeing a Thermostart plug that MF231 may be equipped with. See attached, should be on the intake

Thanks TomSeller,

Where is the intake on this tractor?(I'm no mechanic)I mean if I remove something I can put it back. I just have to know where it is.

thanks

This is not your exact engine, but the intake manifold is the lighter grey part towards the top. This is where the air comes into the engine and the Thermostart should heat this air. The thermostart should be to the left on the picture. This picture is of the right (passenger side).

This is for the MF 231..... NOT the MF 231S....

Look at where the exhaust muffler hooks to on the engine. The metal piece between the muffler and the engine is the manifold.

The 231 has a "Thermostart" for cold weather. Had to use mine a few times this year.

Turn the key all the way to the right but don't spin the starter over. You'll have to hold the key in that position because it's spring loaded and will just return to the 'on' position if u let go.

While you're holding the key in the position mentioned above, you should see a little smoke come out a tiny hole in the manifold after about 30 seconds to a minute. This lets you know that the thermostart is working. You may have to do this several times, but make sure you have the throttle wide open while trying to start the engine. I find this makes it much easier/faster to start. But when the tractor starts, immediately return the throttle back to idle so the engine can warm up.

When u see the smoke coming out the manifold, hold the key in position for another 20 seconds or so then try and start the engine. Keep repeating this process til the engine starts.

These Perkins engines are very strong and reliable, but are also known for "wanting to sleep in" when it's cold outside. Haha

Thanks for the information, I found it a few minutes ago and did as you suggested and on the second try it fired right up. The first time I had the throttle shut down and when I open it up some it fired right up.
Now I can set some hay out and get muddy...:(...:)....
Thanks again Travis_R.

Exhaust manifold? I have been under the understanding the thermastart burns fuel in the intake manifold to pre heat it.

I'm not exactly sure where the fuel is actually heated, but the SMOKE from activating the thermostart comes out a tiny hole in the manifold that the exhaust hooks to.
