HELLO TO ALL,
i have the power steering system back on my friends
tractor. i have rebuilt the cylinder, and control valve.
the tractor steering was hard to the right, and easy to
the left, so i adjusted it. it is now about the same in both
directions. but when the wheel is turned farther, it is harder
to turn. this is in both directions. there is a fine adjustment
on this, but the manuals my friend has do not cover this type.
the acuating arm has a square boss, that goes into a square
hole in the arm below. there is an allen setscrew with locknut
to adjust this. i do not know how much clearance to give this,
or is this a matter of feel on the steering?

WL: My old MF165 used a tapered round pin fitting into a hole in the lower arm to adjust PS sensitivity. Sounds like yours is slightly different. I'm assuming that the square pin is tapered?? where it goes into the hole in the lower arm. That adjustment on mine was to first bottom out the tapered pin; then back it out 7 full turns as a starting point; then fine tune for good steering feel, etc. Not sure that would apply to yours because it depends upon thread pitch of the adjustment. However, if I understand your symptom correctly, it sounds as if you need more clearance. There has to be sufficient clearance so that the control valve opens before the pin contacts the lower arm.

That is the sensitivity adjustment on that system. As things wear you will sometimes have to give them more clearance for the steering to be at full power. You will have to readjust the directional centering link when you adjust that kind of sensitivity adjustment.

FREDEX,
the one with the tapered pin is described in the manual
i have. this one is a square boss,(not tapered) goes into a
square hole in the arm below, and is adjusted with an allen
setscrew, and locknut. i am going to the dealer this morning,
and see if they have a manual that covers this type. otherwise,
i have no idea how to adjust this. as i said in my previous post,
the steering is easy, until the wheels are turned to the extreme,
and then the steering gets hard to turn.
thanks for the reply. i will let you know how this turns out.

OK W.L. The picture in my mind is square boss in square hole. Hole bigger than boss? Set screw takes up slack between the two? BAck out the set screw to increase sensitivity of PS. Just play with it until it feels right. AND NOTE BIGDEAN's observation about having to re-center the linkage to the control valve after changing the set screw else one direction will be more sensitive than the other.

HELLO TO ALL,
my friend dale came out, and i adjusted the steering,
while he sat in the drivers seat, and checked it. the
steering is now working great. my comment, i am
impressed with how litte adjustment it takes to make
it better, or sometimes worse.
thanks to all that replied, and good luck to all.
