MF 1547 PTO problem

I have a MF 1547 with about 100 hours on it and the PTO lever has popped out several times in the past leading to costly repairs. Has anyone had similar problems with the PTO popping out ? The PTO lever is now locked in mechanically and will only operate by using the dashboard switch. Has anyone had a similar problem with their Massey's ? Thanks, Steve K.

No issues...I have an 08 1547 with about 450 hours.

Most of my time has been running the PTO...bush hog, rototiller, small square baler, ect.

I spoke on the phone yesterday with the OP about his PTO problem which occurs with heavy PTO use. I am not knowledgeable on MF and their PTO operation and suggested he post here in hopes of some answers.

If I understand correctly......there is a mechanical lever PTO engagement with an electrical on/off actuator. Seems that the OP had issues with the mechanical PTO lever working itself into a partial engagement due to heavy-duty use of the PTO which caused expensive failure.

The OP has had significant issues on a low-hours tractor and is just out of warranty. Now wonders about using the PTO with chipper or stump-grinder or other high-demand PTO operations.

What happened in the failure? What parts broke?

I've seen a 1540 that the lever was bent from trying to force the pto into gear when the splines were not lined up. That made the collar not lock in fully and destroy the splines on the shaft & collar. It's a pretty simple system on the mechanical end. If it was something like that, better make sure all the parts were changed.

I have a 1547 and sounds like the same problem that twin teir farms had. The PTO would pop out, now they say the clutch on it is spent and its going to cost $6000 to fix. Seems to be a reocurring issue? Any tips or advice on this?

This sounds just like what was happening to my MF 1540. The pto lever would pop out when using my finish mower. My tractor is a 2007 model but only has 300 hrs on it. I just recently bought a 6' shredder. It worked once to shred about 3 acres. Then next time I went to use it, it would just make a grinding noise when engaging the pto. The pto lever when engaded always bottomed out in the slot. Now that my tractor has been repaired at great expense, I know this was not normal. The mechanic that did the repair showed me the old gear. It was worn on the edge. The pto was never fully engaging on the gear because the gear was installed backwards at the factory! Now when the pto lever is engaged, there is room left in the bottom of the slot. and you can feel it fully engage.

I have had same types of problems with the pto on my 1531. After seeing these posts, i'm kind of thinking the both the front axle and the pto are weak points on these mf tractors.

I'm thinking that in some cases the operator is the weak point.

I suppose it is possible. However. You have different people having the same types of issues with the 1500 series mf tractor. Another concept is if it were the 0perator, the operator would tend to have issues with cars, trucks, lawn and garden equipment, and other tractors and farm equipment. If the operator is getting good quality service out of his other equipment the finger points back to mf and agco.

This is extreme operator error and displays a total lack of mechanical aptitude.
Not the fault of AGCO whatsoever.
