I just purchased a restored 1965 MF 135. When I turn the tractor off, the 3 point hitch drops. Is this how this tractor is designed or is something wrong?

How fast does it drop? They will all leak down some. With something on it like a plow or blade, leaking down in 15 minutes is OK. If it drops full down as soon as soon as the engine stops, you have a big leak and you should deal with finding and fixing it. It could be as simple as a relief valve that's stuck open to a leaking lift cylinder seal.

It is called drift and is normal on most machines. The manufacture should have a spec for what is an okay amount of drift for any given machine.
Like stated if it just drops all the way down as soon as you shut it off,,,something is wrong.

With no implement on, it drops immediately as soon as the tractor is shut off.

If the handle is in the raised position and it drops immediately as soon as the tractor is shut off. Huston, you have a problem. Dirt in the relief valve would be my first guess. I can't say for sure if it something wrong because I do not know for sure what a 1965 MF 135 should do but bet it should not drop like that.
Normal drift would an amount of inches over an amount of time. Say 3" in 10 minutes. So if it is free falling then something is leaking the fluid back to tank. I would ask the person you got it from seeing you just got it.

You have a major leak. Pull the right side access plate start the engine and raise the lift lever. UNDER NO CIRCUMMSATNCES PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE HYDRAULIC COMPARTMENT WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING! Using a flashlight, look up at the top of the hydraulic compartment. That's where the lift cylinder is located. Check for a leak there first. Anything more that a few drops is a leak. Next look at the fluid around the pump. Do you see a lot of turbulence and hear high frequency noise. If so the relief valve is stuck open. Look at the corners of the pump. You could have a failed end plate gasket. Finally, I believe the 135 has a supply tube that runs from the pump to the lift cover to supply the lift cylinder. You may have to use a mirror to see the standpipe but look for fluid streaming in that upper right front corner are of the hydraulic compartment.

So much for a "restored tractor". Many times this means a fresh coat of paint!

Maybe the word immediately was a little strong. It takes 20 to 30 seconds to drop. It does look like a brand new tractor but I knew they did not restore the engine or transmission. So maybe the word restored was a little strong also. I wanted an old tractor I could work on and that's what I got. The information I have received so far has been very helpful. I can't wait to open it up and take a look.

I have a Massey 35 that does this and I have discovered it is the standpipe. The O-ring isn't sealing and the fluid is passing by once the pump is no longer running.

It's worth looking into.
( the standpipe on mine is under the plate on the top cover where you would hook up a diverter or hydraulic valve. )
