Mechanic replaced a clutch/pressure plate on recently purchased 1020 John Deere, the clutch is single stage, when a bush hog is attached and you attempt to engage
the grinding begins which will not allow engagement of the bush hog.
The only way is to pre-engage, and than start the tractor. The mechanic says this was a flaw with this type of single stage clutch setup and this is why those who purchased
these single stage John Deere's got rid of them.

The tractor was purchased very cheap because the clutch was out and the repair was justified for this reason. Does this make sense to anyone or is this mechanic
blowing smoke because he did something wrong during the installation ?

Does the tractor not have a PTO clutch? I'm not familiar with that tractor, but if it has a single stage clutch, there should be a separate clutch for the PTO. Pull the PTO clutch, engage the PTO , then release the PTO clutch to start the brush hog. That is how my grand father in laws AC 6140 and my Zetor work. Again, I am not familiar with your tractor, so hopefully someone that is will chime in.

mulehaed82 you say you're familiar with this tractor, I wonder if you can give me some more details to work with , the mechanic has done work for me in the past
and seemed to know what he was doing this is why I would appreciate more details to work with.

If the clutch engages to the fly wheel on the engine, how in the world is anything turning after the clutch has been disengaged from the engine? Got to be something like 1 adjustment, 2 bad pressure plate, 3 wrong clutch plate, 4 flywheel bearing froze to trans shaft or bad, 5 don't thing throwout bearing would do that if it was bad.

Your "mechanic" is an idiot. The description of your tractor's clutch operation is one of a two stage clutch with an inoperative PTO stage.

Id be sure it has the correct john deere hygard fluid in it then id check the correct amount of free travel in the clutch adjustment and also the clutch must be made by john deere

I agree. Single stage or 2 stage, you should not need to "pre-engage" your PTO with a properly working and properly adjusted clutch.

JD offered a transmission driven pto option but I've never seen a 1020 with that option.

If it had a single stage clutch, it would either disengage so the PTO AND transmission shifters could be engaged without grinding, or the transmission shifter would have to be "pre-engaged" as well because the clutch is totally inoperative. My first comment stands.
