Measuring RPMs: Single Cylinder Two-Stroke & Other

I am looking for ways to measure the RPMs of single cylinder, two-stroke dirt bike engines. I've seen a wire/reed style that looked like it might work for diesels as well.

Does anyone have experience with them or seen this sort of thing?

Are you looking for a tach to mount on the bike, or just a test instrument?

Give Autometer a call. www.autometer.com
They may have an inductive pickup type tach that you can use
on the bike.
If you are looking for a test type tool I would suggest a good
automotive dwell type tach.

Most lawnmower shops sell a cheap 'easy'- watch battery powered inductive pickup tach.

We old 6v tractor users love 'em.

I'm really looking for a test tach, but if I can find one that will mount on the bars, then I'll consider it too.

What I'm after is to perform exhaust sound tests at specified RPM levels. I can make a db meter using a cassette tape recorder that has a db input meter. But motocross bikes don't have tachs and I need one to show me the engine speed.

Check with your local Stihl dealer or other chainsaw dealer. I picked up one from my Stihl dealer and it does 2 and 4 cycle engines and has a digital display. I think it was $ 105.
